Football is a game of opinions.

We support different teams, rate players differently and, generally, have a totally different outlook of the beautiful game to each other.

After all, it would be pretty boring if everyone supported the same team and had the same opinion, wouldn’t it?

Fans are always disagreeing over how good certain players are. After all, the debate over who the GOAT is: Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi has raged on for more than a decade.

While everyone knows those two are incredible players, the only argument is over which one is better.

But what about players that fans don’t think are actually that good?

We all love identifying ‘overrated’ players. Players who are hyped up but, every time you watch them, you wonder what they’re all about.

It doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t rate them but, rather, don’t rate them quite as high as others.

But who is the most overrated player of all time?

Well, that’s a question acefootball.com asked fans recently. They surveyed 6,121 football fans across Europe to nominate their most overrated player of all time. They then created a list of the 20 most common answers to create a 1-20.

It’s fair to say the results are pretty surprising.

Let’s take a look at 20-1 and the percentage of fans that voted for each player:

20 | Frenkie De Jong – 5%

19 | Ledley King – 5%

18 | Robin Van Persie – 6%

17 | Paul Scholes – 6.5%

16 | Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang – 7%

5 | Diego Maradona – 18%

2 | Paul Pogba – 22%

1 | Steven Gerrard – 23.5%

So, Steven Gerrard is the most overrated footballer of all time…apparently.

The same Steven Gerrard who played for Liverpool for 17 seasons, making more than 700 appearances, scoring 186 goals, winning nine trophies - including the Champions League. He even came third in the Ballon d’Or in 2005.

We’re guessing the majority of fans asked were based in Manchester - or Manchester United fans. Not only because Gerrard is named the most overrated player of all time but Mohamed Salah (7th), Virgil van Dijk (11th) and Jordan Henderson (12th) all feature.

Elsewhere in the list, United’s Pogba - whose ability certainly divides - is in second. The World Cup winner has the potential to be one of the best midfielders in world football on his day. When it’s not his day, he’s average at best.

In third is a player some would consider the greatest of all time - Pele. The Brazilian scored 1279 goals in 1363 games during his career but many modern day fans question the legitimacy of this.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is seeing Kylian Mbappe in fourth. The 21-year-old is already a World Cup winner and has won four Ligue 1 titles with Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain. He’s a Ballon d’Or winner in the making but, perhaps he’s only ever played in France, has counted against him here.

Making up the top five is Diego Maradona - another player many consider to be the greatest of all time.

Both Ronaldo and Messi feature (9th and 10th) with fans of each player probably voting for the other as overrated.

We'd love to meet the fans who participated in this survey...
