Arsenal fans are revelling in the signing of Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid - and it's clear the feeling's mutual.

The Gunners activated the Ghanaian's £45m release clause on Deadline Day, in doing so plugging the gap in one of their weakest areas of the pitch.

Perhaps early comparisons with Patrick Vieira are a little premature.

Even so, his physicality and ability to set the pace with his inch-perfect passing will make him a hugely valuable addition.

Mikel Arteta's imprint is becoming more and more apparent and it will be fascinating to see how Partey helps Arsenal to transition from defence to attack.

And tactically, he couldn't ask for a bigger baptism of fire as Arteta's men head to the Etihad to play Manchester City this weekend.

A daunting potential debut aside, the 27-year-old is clearly relishing a new start at the Emirates and looked delighted as he was finally given his number 18 shirt.

If he can fuse that enthusiasm with his combative nature on the pitch, Arsenal will have hit upon a winner.

It may have taken a few days for his kit reveal, but the north Londoners didn't hang about in securing his services.

Within hours of their approach becoming public knowledge, they had agreed terms and made the announcement before midnight.

Even a quick peruse of Partey's displays both for Atletico and the Ghanaian national team show why Arsenal were so eager to get a deal over the line.

He can't be accused of lacking ambition, either, speaking at his unveiling of his hopes of winning a Premier League title.

"Everybody is wanting to win all the trophies that can be won. That’s my goal also," Partey said, per BBC Sport.

“It’s something that’s difficult but we're working towards it and we're ready. We have to go all out and try and achieve all I have said.

“That’s the objective of the club and myself. We have to get back to where we belong.”
