Joachim Löw was under fire going into Germany's Nations League meeting with Switzerland.A desire to rejuvenate Die Mannschaft by way of relentless experimentation has led to serious criticism in the German press, as well as from legends like Lothar Matthäus. And Löw's players did not help matters, conceding from a set piece just five minutes in. Germany's defence turned painfully static as the ball was looped into Mario Gavranović, who duly headed it over a flailing Manuel Neuer.It wasn't the stopper's finest moment and within minutes, he had nearly made things a whole lot worse.
Neuer's night to forget
Under little pressure, the 34-year-old could easily have taken a controlling touch. Instead, he attempted to lob the ball over Haris Seferović and managed to hit it straight at him.
Were it not for a heavy touch from the Swiss forward, it would have been a humiliating blunder.
Yet Switzerland didn't let up and before long, they'd punished Neuer again.
As the Bayern Munich 'keeper rushed off his line, he was chipped by Remo Freuler to make it 2-0.
Chelsea duo team up
With alarm bells ringing, Neuer did at least go some way towards redeeming himself with a long ball to Kai Havertz.
Chelsea's record signing knocked it on to new domestic teammate Timo Werner, who wrestled through the Swiss defence and went on an impressive run to pull one back.
Were it not for a shaky display from Antonio Rudiger at the other end, it might have been an encouraging night for Frank Lampard all round.
Lampard will no doubt have been particularly pleased as Havertz then turned from provider to goalscorer thanks to a brilliant run on the right.
Serge Gnabry produces superb back-heel
Whatever Lampard's sentiments, Löw cannot have enjoyed the game in such luxury.
Gavranovic scored his second of the night to restore Switzerland's two-goal lead - but the visitors were pegged back once again by a moment of brilliance in the form of Serge Gnabry's back-heel.
The drama wasn't over, with Fabian Schär dismissed in stoppage time for a second foul on Julian Draxler.
Who said the Nations League was boring?!
