Chelsea have enjoyed one heck of a summer.

Finishing fourth in the Premier League last term was a huge achievement in Frank Lampard's first campaign in charge of the club - particularly given the global transfer ban that was imposed on the west London club.

But it's safe to say that the Blues have made up for lost time.

Lampard's side have spent over £200million on a number of world-class stars including Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, Kai Havertz and Edouard Mendy.

Those deals have transformed the Blues' squad and will undoubtedly move them closer to the Premier League title race.

But don't be fooled into thinking that Chelsea are done.

Reports regularly linked the west Londoners with a move for Declan Rice over the course of the summer transfer window.

That didn't come off, but according to Adrian Durham it's a move that should be prioritised - even if it's at the expense of a current Chelsea star.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Durham said: “They’ve been thinking about bringing in Declan Rice for a long, long time.

“If you sell Kante and bring in Rice, It’s a big upgrade.

“This is someone who can do Kante’s job, and go on the attack and use the ball quickly.

“Maybe not the Kante from yesteryear.

“What I’m looking at is a top side trying to do stuff in Europe and in the Premier League as well.

“Is Kante too limited? Rice does more than Kante – that’s what I’m saying."

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

This is a move that looks likely to happen sooner rather than later.

We all know the story of how Declan Rice was let go by the Blues in his teenage years, and that only fuels the romantic nature of an inevitable return.

But that doesn't mean that a deal will be easy to do.

Valued at £44.55million by Transfermarkt, Rice would probably cost up to around £80million if Chelsea were to convince West Ham to sell.

The midfielder is vital to the Irons as they look to avoid relegation this term and that will be represented in his price tag.

Lampard is clearly a big fan of the England international, and with Kante's future seemingly up in the air it may make sense to bring Rice in as a replacement.

Whether that happens or not remains to be seen, but it's certainly one to keep an eye on.
