Harry Maguire suffered yet more 2020 heartache with his first England red card on Wednesday night.

The last few months have been incredibly tough for the Manchester United captain with his arrest in Greece during the summer appearing to have an understandably negative impact on his football.

Maguire looked a wobbly presence in the United back-line during their opening Premier League games and received wide-spread criticism for his performance in the 6-1 Tottenham defeat.

Maguire sent off vs Denmark

The former Leicester City defender was woefully at fault for Spurs' opener with two botched headers and an apparent foul on his own player allowing Tanguy Ndombele to score a pivotal strike.

So, it's only natural that receiving his marching orders within half an hour of the 1-0 defeat to Denmark, which may jeopardise England's UEFA Nations League hopes, compounded his misery.

We all know - at least we should, anyway - that Maguire is a world-class defender on his day, so it's sad to see the England man looking a shadow of the player who earned a record-breaking fee.

Gone in 31 minutes

Nevertheless, his two yellow cards in the Wembley defeat to Denmark earned him an unwanted piece of history as the quickest dismissal from an outfield player in England's 150-year history.

Overall, it's the second fastest with England having received 15 red cards up until 2018, according to the Mirror, with the Three Lions having amassed three dismissals since then.

Eighteen sendings off in one and a half centuries - although, yes, red cards were only introduced around 50 years ago - is a pretty low rate, so we decided to look through through the 18 instances.

England's red cards ranked by time

We've ranked the 18 red cards that England have garnered by when they happened during the game, so check out the list down below to see who was dismissed even faster than Maguire.

(Times of red cards compiled using englandstats.com, myfootballfacts.com and corroborated by video footage where possible)

18. Reece James vs Denmark (2020) - full-time

Not only did James make history last night for being the first England player to be sent off on their full debut, but his dismissal for dissent is also his country's first to be given after the final whistle.

17. Alan Smith vs Macedonia (2002) - 90+2 minutes

A disastrous evening for England that saw them labour to a draw against European minnows was compounded when Smith was giving his marching orders for a second yellow card in injury time.

16. Steven Gerrard vs Ukraine (2011) - 88 minutes

Another case of two cautions late in the day with Gerrard almost costing the Three Lions with his heavy-handed tackling as they limped to a 1-1 draw at Wembley in this Euro 2012 qualifier.

15. Alan Mullery vs Yugoslavia (1968) - 87 minutes

In the words of Mullery himself: "Bobby Moore rolled me a ball to the halfway line and I had my back towards their goal. I knocked it back to him but this fella came in and caught me on the left calf.

"Whatever he had on his studs it wasn't very nice and as I looked round the back of my sock it was red, the blood was pouring out and my heart was beating really fast.

"In sheer anger I turned round and kicked him in the groin, and down he went like a sack of spuds.”

14. David Batty vs Poland (1999) - 84 minutes

Just one year after missing the pivotal penalty in England's shootout defeat at the 1998 World Cup, Batty's international career literally ended with a straight red card after an absolutely brutal tackle.

13. Trevor Cherry vs Argentina (1977) - 83 minutes

Cherry holds the unwanted distinction of being one of only two England players to be sent off in a friendly with his confusing incident seeing both him and Daniel Bertoni given an early shower.

12. Raheem Sterling vs Ecuador (2014) - 79 minutes

The other player to be sent off in a friendly? Well, here we are, because Sterling was sent packing during this World Cup warm-up match for a clash with Antonio Valencia, who was also sent off.

11. Alan Ball vs Poland (1973) - 76 minutes

England's failure to qualify for the 1974 World Cup had a lot to do with their tough qualifiers against Poland with a 2-0 defeat on the road seeing Ball dismissed for a scuffle with Lesław Ćmikiewicz.

10. Wayne Rooney vs Montenegro (2011) - 74 minutes

With this second England dismissal, Rooney sparked mass debate about whether it was worth taking a player to Euro 2012 who would be suspended for the first two games after lashing out.

9. Kyle Walker vs Iceland (2020) - 70 minutes

I hope you're starting to get the picture that most England red cards happen deep into matches and Walker's dismissal in Reykjavik set the wheel in motion for a hat-trick of sendings off in 2020.

8. Paul Ince vs Sweden (1998) - 66 minutes

England made tough work of qualifying for Euro 2000 when their bright start was ruined by two quick-fire Sweden goals and they were as many yellow cards for Ince as he exited the pitch.

7. Wayne Rooney vs Portugal (2006) - 62 minutes

One of the most infamous red cards in Three Lions history as Rooney sparked a notorious wink from Cristiano Ronaldo after being sent off for stamping Ricardo Carvalho in his unmentionables.

6. David Beckham vs Austria (2005) - 59 minutes

Beckham became the first player to receive two red cards for England when he picked up two yellow cards in two minutes. A lot of twos there, but his teammates only needed one goal to win regardless.

5. Paul Scholes vs Sweden (1999) - 51 minutes

Scholes has always had something of a reputation for dodgy tackling and a fine example of that while tracking back combined with a continental referee officiating made for an instant red card.

4. David Beckham vs Argentina (1998) - 47 minutes

It doesn't get more infamous than this. Beckham became a national figure of hatred after he was dismissed for the pettiest of flicks on Diego Simeone as England crashed out of the World Cup.

3. Ray Wilkins vs Morocco (1986) - 43 minutes

At long, long last we've finally made our way into the first-half with the legendary Wilkins becoming England's first ever red card recipient at a World Cup for throwing the ball at the ref. Yeh, seriously.

2. Harry Maguire vs Denmark (2020) - 31 minutes

The earliest outfield dismissal by almost a quarter of an hour, Maguire had his first touch to blame when he relinquished almost 12 yards of space to lunge in with a late tackle to end his evening.

1. Rob Green vs Ukraine (2009) - 14 minutes

However, relax Harry, because Green is miles ahead as the quickest England player to be sent off, as well as the only goalkeeper, when he stopped a one-on-one with a foul in this qualifying defeat.

Pivotal time for Maguire

So, there you have it, the classic situation of a goalkeeping rushing out to try and thwart a striker clear through on goal saves Maguire from having an unwanted record to his name.

However, with the United captain having so much on his mind right now, you have to wonder whether some time to himself would be prudent to regain the form he showed at times in 2019/20.

A red card can happen to the best of players, no doubt, but considering the quality we know that Maguire possesses, you really get the feeling that something isn't quite right at the moment.
