Tottenham Hotspur finally found some back-up to Harry Kane this summer.

Chairman Daniel Levy secured a deal to bring in Carlos Vinicius on loan from Benfica, while holding the option to buy him on a permanent basis in the summer.

Vinicius was in fine form for his parent club last season, scoring 18 league goals, and he will offer a proper alternative to Kane, who has been overplayed for so long.

Indeed, since Fernando Llorente’s departure, Spurs have been operating without a second striker, meaning Kane has been forced to play in pretty much every game when fit.

But it seems they cast their net far and wide in the summer to bring in reinforcements.

Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst was floated as a possible option, and he says that Spurs were “serious” about signing him.

The Bundesliga club, though, were asking for €35m (£31.7m) to let the forward go, which was a fee that Spurs were not willing to pay.

Weghorst scored 20 goals in all competitions last season and he claims he could have ended up in north London had the cards fallen his way.

He told Kicker, via Sport Witness: “I can be honest; of course, I knew that there was interest left and right.

“It was serious with Tottenham; I was a candidate. Of course, you are interested in something like that too. It is also a confirmation that I’m on the right track.”

“I’m 28 now, and I’d like to win titles. I made that clear here. I hope,” said Weghorst, “that we improve as a team so that we can possibly do more overall.

“If one day, I have the feeling that I cannot achieve my goals at VfL, then I will say so. That is currently not the case. The Premier League is still a dream of mine.”

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

It seems that Levy was making enquiries for a number of players in the summer and Weghorst was certainly one of them.

A tall, mobile striker, he would have been more in the mould of Llorente than Kane, and would have offered a nice alternative to the England captain.

Clearly, Spurs were desperate to bring in somebody to help strengthen Jose Mourinho’s squad and Vinicius is the man they ended up with.

He has a completely different profile to Weghorst, and maybe it is one they can revisit in the summer if they are unable to do a deal for Vinicius.

After all, the Premier League remains his dream.
