Danny Welbeck is currently searching for a club.
The striker has been released by Watford and it marks a rather ignominious spell in a career that looked set to explode when he was a youngster.
The 29-year-old made his Manchester United debut back in the 2008/09 season, and went on to make a total of 142 appearances for the club, scoring 29 goals and registering 21 assists.
In 2014, he moved to Arsenal, with the Gunners spending £16m to bring him to the Emirates.
During his time at the Emirates, he scored 32 goals in 126 appearances, while he also won 42 England caps.
But history could have been altered.
Arsene Wenger is currently promoting his new book and has given a wide-ranging interview to The Athletic.
In it, he claims that Welbeck was on the verge of moving to Tottenham Hotspur but that he intervened at the last minute, while he was waiting to meet the Pope.
Wenger said, when asked about funny stories for new signings: “Danny Welbeck when I went to the Match for Peace.
“At the airport I was told he was signing for Tottenham and I managed to intercept him. It was a funny story because I was negotiating all day.
“We had Ivan (Gazidis) and Dick Law to negotiate and they called me up and I had the agent on the phone.
“And I told him, ‘Look, I have to hang up because I’m in front of the Pope’. He said to me, ‘What?’. I said ‘Yes’, because we were queuing to have a photo with the Pope in a private audience, and I was at the back of the queue because I had to talk and negotiate.
“I arrived in front of the Pope and I had to say, ‘Look, that’s not possible anymore. I will meet the Pope now’.”

Wenger should have let Welbeck move to Spurs.
He endured an injury-ravaged time at Arsenal, missing a total of 123 games during his spell in north London.
He also never managed to score more than five goals in a single Premier League season at the Gunners, essentially becoming a big-money flop.
It led to him being released, and his subsequent move to Watford hasn’t worked out either.
It’s safe to say that Tottenham dodged a bullet here.
