Arsenal made moves to improve their defence in the summer transfer window.
Mikel Arteta’s side brought in Gabriel from Lille in a £27m deal, Pablo Mari arrived from Flamengo while they also secured Cedric Soares on a free transfer.
And the Gunners have enjoyed a fair start to the season in the Premier League.
They beat Fulham 3-0 on the opening day, defeated West Ham United and Sheffield United 2-1 and lost 3-1 to Liverpool.
They will be back in action this weekend against Manchester City, a major test of their abilities, but it seems manager Arteta is not quite finished when it comes to restructuring his defence.
The Daily Express carries a report from Todofichajes, claiming that the Gunners are eyeing a move for Pau Torres in the January transfer window.
Manchester United are also interested in the Villarreal centre-back, who has become something of a star in La Liga.
The 23-year-old has made 48 appearances in total for Villarreal, and has also won five caps for Spain.
He is highly-rated, and the Spanish club would like to receive €40m (£36.2m) for his signature.
GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…
Arsenal still need a truly world-class central defender.
While Gabriel is a start, he has regularly been fielded alongside David Luiz, and he is not the player he once was.
Thus, attempting to bring in an elite centre-back makes all the sense in the world.
WhoScored statistics paint a picture of an exceptional defender who averages 0.8 tackles per game, 1.8 interceptions, 3 clearances, and a pass success rate of 88.2%. That accuracy comes alongside 6.2 long balls per game.
This is a shrewd, effective defender who does not lunge in and picks his moments.
He also has the accuracy required to bring the ball out of defence; he could be the perfect addition for Arteta.
