Arsenal signed Konstantinos Mavropanos back in 2018 but it’s fair to say it hasn’t really worked out.

The defender arrived for a fee of just £1.8m, becoming one of Arsene Wenger’s final signings during his time at the Emirates.

Mavropanos is 22 and he has made just eight senior appearances for the club.

Three of those came in the Premier League in 2017/18 and four in 18/19.

He did play once in 19/20, in the 2-2 draw with Standard Liege in the Europa League and he has subsequently been sent on loan to Stuttgart in Germany.

But he has now been dealt a serious setback, with Sport Witness carrying a report from Kicker that he is set to be out until the end of 2020 due to a meniscus tear.

The injury requires surgery and is set to further limit his development.

The Greek defender was not in the squad against either Freiburg or Mainz in the Bundesliga, though he did play 70 minutes against Bayer Leverkusen at the start of the month.

Stuttgart have yet to discuss Mavropanos’ injury with Arsenal but he is almost certain to be out until 2021 at this point.

The centre-back should really be playing regular football at this point but he will be watching on from the sidelines for the foreseeable future.

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

This is only going to set Mavropanos back.

He was hailed by his old manager, Wenger, after making his full debut against Manchester United in 2018.

Although Arsenal lost 2-1, Wenger said that Mavropanos “surprised everybody by his quality today”, and it seemed that he would only go from strength to strength.

The opposite has happened, however.

He has not found himself in the team and has now been dealt another major blow following a loan designed to increase his minutes and help him improve.

He simply cannot catch a break.
