The transfer window is shut, but Aston Villa won't mind too much.

It was a pretty successful transfer window for the midlands side who will be very happy with the transfer business that they completed.

Last season saw Villa narrowly avoid relegation from the Premier League and so it was essential that the club were able to strengthen.

They've certainly done that.

Dean Smith's side brought in Matty Cash, Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Martinez, Bertrand Traore and Ross Barkley as part of their summer spending spree.

Those deals will significantly increase the level of quality in the squad, but they could have had even more.

Plenty of reports were doing the rounds linking Aston Villa with a move for a new striker.

The main name being mentioned was Josh King who was seemingly keen on a move after suffering relegation from the Premier League with Bournemouth.

While a deal was not agreed before the domestic deadline passed, comments from the 28-year-old suggest that he'll still be looking for a move sooner or later.

Speaking to TV2, King said: "If you had asked me two months ago if I thought I would be in Bournemouth (now), I would have answered 110 per cent no.

"It is a bit special to be a football player who has nine months left on his contract. We'll see if I go now or in January.

"Had it been up to me, I would have already signed for a club and started the season, played four games and been in top form.

"I think the club would rather I be there but, like I said, I felt I had done my part and been loyal to the club for many years.

"We had an agreement between us (that he could leave) after what happened in January."

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

It was a big surprise that Josh King didn't get his move to Aston Villa.

The striker is undoubtedly a Premier League level forward after scoring an impressive 42 goals in the top flight for Bournemouth in recent seasons.

That is a tally of a man who deserves to be playing in the top flight.

King's contract is due to expire at the end of the season and so the Norway international will be free to discuss terms over a pre-contract agreement from January.

Based on his comments, it seems that he may well look to do just that.

What that means for Aston Villa's interest remains to be seen, but there's no doubt that King won't be toiling in the second tier for too long.
