Phil Hay delivers Leeds United verdict on summer signing

Leeds United will be very happy with the business done this summer.

With the transfer window now shut it’s time for Victor Orta and his recruitment team to give themselves a pat on the back for their efforts in recent months.

After securing promotion from the Championship the Whites faced an uphill battle to be ready for the new season.

It’s safe to say that it’s a battle that they won.

Orta moved quickly to start strengthening Marcelo Bielsa’s squad and deserves credit for the work that he did.

As well as bringing the likes of Helder Costa, Jack Harrison and Illan Meslier back to the club, Leeds signed a number of solid first team additions.

Bielsa has plenty of faith in his existing group of players, but the additions of Robin Koch, Diego Llorente, Rodrigo and Raphinha will undoubtedly improve the squad.

But what’s even more impressive is the work done to strengthen the youth ranks.

Cody Drameh, Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood are among the talented youngsters that arrived at Elland Road this summer.

Greenwood arrived with a glowing reputation from Arsenal, and according to Phil Hay, the young striker is already showing that he’s worth the money that’s been spent.

Speaking on The Phil Hay Show, Hay said: “He’s started really well at Leeds and he was very well thought of at Arsenal, and they weren’t rushing to get him out [of] the door this summer.

“He made it pretty apparent that he felt there would be a better pathway for him at Leeds and in the end, Leeds paid £1.5m for him, which I think could be very good value but it’s still [a] substantial investment for a player who is coming into the academy rather than the first team.

“From what we’ve seen of him so far, his movement and his finishing and everything else, he looks like a very natural striker.”

GIVEMESPORT’S Phil Spencer says…

Sam Greenwood is such an exciting addition.

He may not have been the sort of big-name arrival that will get the same plaudits as the deals for Rodrigo or Raphinha, but my word is it a good deal.

The former Sunderland and Arsenal youngster is tipped for a very bright future in the game and by moving to Elland Road the hope is that he can kick on even further.

Marcelo Bielsa loves working with young players and if he can work his magic with Greenwood then they could have a proper player on their hands.
