Tottenham Hotspur spent the majority of the summer trying to sign a central defender.

While chairman Daniel Levy pulled out all the stops in a transformative transfer window, bringing in the likes of Sergio Reguilon, Gareth Bale, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, the European transfer window ended without the addition of a central defender.

That was despite a number of links with Inter Milan star Milan Skriniar.

However, Levy appears to have finally given boss Jose Mourinho what he wants with a swoop for Swansea City defender Joe Rodon.

He has arrived on a permanent basis, as Spurs beat the domestic deadline to secure an experienced member of the Swansea backline.

Rodon is just 22, but has 54 appearances for the Swans under his belt, along with four caps for Wales, and the deal that has been struck looks a masterful one.

Football Insider reports that Spurs have paid around £15m including £4m in add-ons and he will slot straight into Mourinho’s squad as the club look to compete on multiple fronts.

And Kevin Phillips, the former Premier League striker, believes that they have got themselves a bargain, as Rodon could potentially treble in value to £45m, although he is surprised that Rodon was not sent back on loan to Swansea.

Asked about whether he was left shocked by the player being integrated straight into the squad, he told Football Insider: “Yes, definitely. For me I think Tottenham have made some good signings. I know that area (centre-back) is obviously what has been identified to strengthen.

“Can he go and make an impact straight away? It’s a big ask.

“Common sense would probably suggest bring the player in and loan him straight back to give him more experience.

“At the start of next season or maybe in January when he’s played a few more games then maybe bring him back and have a look at him.

“I think the obvious one is secure the player first and then send him back out on loan and let him develop as a player.

“All of sudden you have a brilliant player on your hands who doubles in money or trebles in money and also performs for your team for the next four, five, six, seven years.”

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

Spurs have done a brilliant deal here.

Rodon is a fine player who has plenty of experience at both club and international level and he will only improve playing with the likes of Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez every day in training.

Not only that, but he will also link up with both Bale and Ben Davies, his international team-mates.

It may be a surprise that Spurs did not offer to let him go back to Wales as something of a sweetener in the deal, but he will develop simply by training with the squad and learning under Mourinho.

One feels he is safe in Spurs’ hands.
