Timo Werner scored twice inside the opening half an hour to set up Chelsea's 3-3 draw with Southampton. The wait for the £47.5m striker's Premier League breakthrough is over as he played a starring role at Stamford Bridge. Having teamed up so effectively in Germany's midweek draw with Switzerland, Werner returned the favour for Kai Havertz, providing the assist for the Blues' third goal. Before kick-off, Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl had warned of the danger posed by his former RB Leipzig frontman. "I have worked with a lot players and he is one of the quickest and he is really hard to defend against. He is getting a more complete striker now and is learning a lot," he told reporters. "He is a good striker for Chelsea and he is only happy when he scores."
By that measure, Werner will have been delighted as he broke free of his man with a clever dummy before shrugging off four defenders to bury it in the bottom corner.
The 24-year-old's second was equally imaginative, lobbing a brilliant ball over the top from Jorginho past Alex McCarthy before heading it in.
Another Kepa horrorshow
Predictably, though, there were fewer positives at the other end as Kepa Arrizabalaga - replacing Edouard Mendy, who was injured on Senegal duty - failed to impress.
The Spanish international was easily rounded for Danny Ings' first goal and then came rushing off his line for the equaliser as Kurt Zouma botched a back-pass.
The onrushing Che Adams slipped past him and with Southampton still failing to score, Kepa then tried to make up the ground but ended up hurtling into the post as Adams did the rest.
It was fortunate for Frank Lampard then, that Werner was in such unstoppable mood as he squared it to Havertz.
Southampton were resolute, however, as debutant Theo Walcott set up Jannik Vestergaard for an injury-time equaliser to snatch a point.
Lampard will have serious questions as to how his side threw away two points.
