Liverpool were denied two valuable points in their dramatic 2-2 draw against local rivals Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday lunchtime.Jurgen Klopp’s side thought they’d won it at the death thanks to Jordan Henderson’s tap-in in stoppage-time, but the goal was controversially disallowed following a VAR review.Sadio Mane, who opened the scoring in the first minute, was judged by VAR David Coote and assistant Lee Betts to be offside.However, football fans were left perplexed by the images they saw on live TV, which appeared to show that Mane was onside.The Liverpool Echo are reporting that Liverpool have written to the Premier League to review the application of VAR during the game.As well as Henderson’s disallowed goal, Liverpool have formally asked for an assessment of the failure to review the potential red-card challenge by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford on Virgil van Dijk.
Van Dijk was subbed off after only 11 minutes following the challenge and went to hospital for scans after the match.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp - and the club’s fans - are nervously awaiting news about the severity of Van Dijk’s injury.
And the early reports are not good.
beIN Sports announced at half-time of the Manchester City vs Arsenal clash: “Information that we are receiving is that he’s done his Anterior Cruciate Ligament and if that is the case he’ll be out for the best part of seven or eight months”
This remains unconfirmed by Liverpool at the time of writing but, if true, it will be a major blow to the Reds’ hopes of retaining their Premier League title.
