Liverpool will have trudged back across the city rueing a number of decisions after drawing 2-2 with Everton at Goodison Park.

There was no chance of the Merseyside derby being stifled without its normally raucous support from the stands, Sadio Mane handing the visitors the lead after just three minutes.

Michael Keane levelled the scores thanks to some characteristic flapping from Adrian, before Mo Salah's fine strike put Jurgen Klopp's side back in control.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised nine minutes from time, but Jordan Henderson looked to have won it at the death - only for a nonsensical VAR call to rule Mane offside in the build-up.

Liverpool were already furious due to Jordan Pickford's earlier tackle on Virgil van Dijk. The stopper should have been sent off, but was seemingly reprieved because the Dutchman had been offside.

There are now reports that the centre-back will be ruled out for the season, making Pickford's escape even more perplexing.

Richarlison, at least, was punished for his awful challenge on Thiago Alcantara in injury time.

The Toffees forward flew at the midfielder, who had arguably put in a man of the match display, and slammed his boot into Thiago's shin, earning a red card.

Commentating for BT Sport, Steve McManaman could not even watch the replays of the sickening challenge.

While Klopp confirmed that it "didn't look good" for his player, Thiago headed straight to hospital for a scan alongside Van Dijk.

To his credit, Richarlison could have stayed silent on the matter, but has now released the following statement on his website:

"Everyone who knows my background knows that I was never a violent player," he wrote.

"I did not enter that dispute with the intention of hurting Thiago. When I saw that the crash was going to happen, I picked up my foot and hit him with my knee in the pass, which was inevitable due to the speed of the play.

"I already sent a message to him apologising and I also do it here publicly. I hope he hasn’t been hurt and that everything is fine.

"I also apologise to my teammates, my club and my fans for leaving them with one less at the end of the game. Unfortunately, there is nothing I can do to change what happened, other than to reflect, work and move on."

Let's hope Thiago's injury isn't as serious as it looked.
