Sergio Aguero finds himself at the centre of a controversial incident involving assistant referee Sian Massey-Ellis.The Argentine striker put his hand on Massey-Ellis’s neck after a decision went against him during the first half of Manchester City’s 1-0 win over Arsenal on Saturday.While some football fans believe there was nothing in it, others have voiced their criticism of the City star’s actions on social media.The incident was reviewed on Match of the Day, with host Gary Lineker asking Alan Shearer and Ian Wright for their thoughts about the “awkward moment”.Both Premier League strikers-turned-pundits were critical of the South American.
“Yeah, he shouldn’t put his hand on the assistant referee,” Shearer said. “It just wasn’t a good look, Gary, was it?“He shouldn’t do it.”Wright added: “What was that?! Pep Guardiola was also asked to give his thoughts in his post-match press conference.
The Man City boss defended his player, insisting Aguero "the nicest person" he’s ever met.
"Come on guys,” Guardiola was quoted saying by Sky News. “Sergio is the nicest person I ever met in my life. Look for problems in other situations, not in this one."
The Guardian’s Jamie Jackson, meanwhile, understands that Aguero will not face retrospective action from the Premier League following the incident.
This was Aguero’s first league appearance of the season after missing City’s first three fixtures through injury.
He played for 65 minutes in City’s 1-0 victory. Raheem Sterling scored the only goal of the game in the 23rd minute.
