Liverpool fans are coming to terms with the fact Virgil van Dijk might have played his final match this season.
The defender has suffered an ACL injury after a horror tackle from Jordan Pickford and now requires surgery.
In a club statement, Liverpool confirmed the bad news.
They wrote: "Liverpool FC can confirm Virgil van Dijk will undergo surgery on the knee injury he sustained during Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Everton.
"The centre-back damaged knee ligaments following an incident involving Blues goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after six minutes at Goodison Park.
"Van Dijk was required to be substituted and further assessment on the injury has revealed an operation will be needed. No specific timescale is being placed upon his return to action at this stage.
"Following surgery, Van Dijk will begin a rehabilitation programme with the club’s medical team to enable him to reach full fitness as soon as possible."
And on Sunday night, Van Dijk himself finally broke his silence with a statement on social media.
Earlier on Sunday, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher defended the tackle from Pickford insisting the goalkeeper didn't intend to injure Van Dijk.
“Of course, it should have been a red card for Jordan Pickford, it was a terrible tackle.
“There will be a lot of frustration in the Liverpool camp, Liverpool supporters, maybe from neutrals wanting Jordan Pickford banned.
“I am going to defend Jordan Pickford on that. Yeah, it was a terrible tackle. I’ve had my leg broken, I nearly broke Nani’s leg. These things happen, unfortunately in football, I don’t think anyone goes out deliberately to hurt someone.
“I believe 99 per cent of professional footballers will not go and hurt someone.
“Jordan Pickford is all over the place with his game at the moment, he comes out, makes a crazy decision as he has been doing over the last 12 months, and very, very unfortunately one of the top players in the Premier League is in a bad way.
“I really hope and I really believe Jordan Pickford will not be in a good place tonight.”
