But it wasn’t the only shocking tackle in the match.

Late on, Richarlison was shown a straight red card for his tackle on Thiago. Fortunately, Thiago got lucky and appears to have escaped without serious injury.

After the match, the Brazilian issued an official apology to the Liverpool midfielder.

"Everyone who knows my background knows that I was never a violent player," he wrote.

"I did not enter that dispute with the intention of hurting Thiago. When I saw that the crash was going to happen, I picked up my foot and hit him with my knee in the pass, which was inevitable due to the speed of the play.

"I already sent a message to him apologising and I also do it here publicly. I hope he hasn't been hurt and that everything is fine."

However, he caused anger by tweeting an image of the tackle with a thinking face emoji. He soon deleted it.

It was a post that has upset Liverpool supporters, accusing Digne of seeing the funny side of a horrific challenge that could have done serious damage to Thiago.

The tackle was so bad from Richarlison that BT Sport co-commentator Steve McManaman admitted he couldn’t watch the replays.

He told viewers: "I have to turn away.

"It's not only a red card for Richarlison but a massive foul on Thiago.

"It doesn't look good and we don't know what he has."

While Peter Crouch added:  "Thiago does well to get up from this. It's a potential leg-breaker."
