The boxing world reacted with shock on Saturday night as underdog Teofimo Lopez upset Vasyl Lomachenko to become the unified lightweight champion. Few saw the result coming, but one man who certainly did was Floyd Mayweather. Lopez was undefeated heading into his grudge match with two-time Olympic champion Lomachenko. Most though expected the experienced Lomachenko to have too much in his locker for the 23-year-old Lopez. At odds of just over 3/1, Mayweather placed a hefty $6,500 on Lopez to pull off an unlikely victory - and it soon looked a wise investment once the first bell rang at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Known as "The Takeover", Lopez was quickly into his stride in the fight. Lomachenko is renowned for taking a few rounds to work his opponents out, but was never allowed to settle by Lopez.By the mid-point of the 12-round bout, it would not have been unreasonable to suggest that Lopez had won every session. Although Lomachenko tried to rally in the second half of the fight, the Ukrainian was ultimately unable to force his way back into the bout. Lopez would be awarded a unanimous decision win on the judges' scorecards.

A huge win for Floyd Mayweather

Whilst Lomachenko lost his WBA (super), WBO and WBC 'franchise' world titles on Saturday,  Mayweather won big. His $6,500 wager on Lopez saw him pocket an impressive $20,150 in winnings!

True to form, "Money" was quick to take to social media to announce his good fortune to his followers. Alongside a picture of his winning betting slip, Mayweather included the caption: "A light win".

Overall, though, the night belonged to Lopez who added Lomachenko's belts to his own IBF lightweight title to both unify the division and announce himself as one of boxing's pound-for-pound best.

Speaking after the contest, Lopez reflected on a tough night's work:

"I had to dig deep. I'm thankful, I'm grateful, and each and every day I take that in...I had to dig in there, and it feels good.

"I knew (Lomachenko) was coming," insisted Lopez. "I can give him that. I don't know if (the judges have) got him up on the scorecards or not. I come to fight, and I come to win...You just gotta keep pressuring him, putting the gas on him. Stick the jab, don't give him that opportunity to set up.

"Every time he wanted to throw, I had at least something for him coming back."

Lopez now assumes Lomachenko's position as the most sought after fighter in the 135-pound division. At such a young age, the sky truly is the limit for the American. His next move is currently unknown, but whenever Lopez does fight next, it would be no surprise to see Mayweather wagering a few dollars on the bout.
