Newcastle United had a relatively busy transfer window by their own standards.

With incomings tipped to be limited, the Magpies surprised fans and pundits alike by completing a handful of significant signings.

As well as signing Mark Gillespie and Jeff Hendrick, the club added Callum Wilson, Jamal Lewis and Ryan Fraser to the first team squad.

They also added Rodrigo Vilca to the under-23 side.

Those deals have certainly bolstered Steve Bruce's squad, however they may now have some decisions to make regarding existing players.

Several fringe stars were tipped to leave the club during the summer transfer window, one of whom was Rolando Aarons.

Aarons was expected to move to Huddersfield Town before the window slammed shut, however a move could not be signed off in time.

But while all parties wanted the deal to happen, it seems that the Terriers are not giving up hope on a deal just yet.

Huddersfield Town chairman Phil Hodgkinson was discussing the pursuit in a recent interview when he all-but confirmed that the club would move to sign the pacey star when the transfer window reopens again in January.

Speaking to Yorkshire Live, Hodgkinson said: "The deal for Rolando was ready to go but we didn’t need to fill that position if the deal for Karlan didn’t go through.

"Ultimately it didn’t go through until Thursday, at which point we set everything in motion with Rolando. He was already in the area, we did his medical on Friday, and we got on with the process and it was ready to go.

"It was just unfortunate that something happened very, very late on with minutes to go that meant that we just couldn’t do it.

"It was just one of those things, not something we could have expected or provided for, but that’s life and we’ve just got to accept that sometimes these things happen in football.

"I think we want to make sure we’re signing the right players that make us better and we believed that Rolando would do that.

"Unfortunately we couldn’t get it done and that’s life and it happens, but we still are confident that he’s the right player, so rather than bringing someone in at the last minute or bringing in someone else…he’s our top target, he remains so, and what we’d rather do is get through the next 10 weeks to January and get it done then rather than bring in somebody that maybe doesn’t tick all the boxes Rolando did."

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

This is a move that certainly seems to make sense.

Rolando Aarons' days at Newcastle United are certainly over and that means that it's in his best interests to move on.

He needs first team football and a move to Huddersfield would certainly offer him that.

While it's a blow that a deal wasn't completed, the fact that the January window is only 10 weeks away is a silver lining.

If Aarons can keep himself fit then this is a deal that I'd certainly expect to come off once the window opens up again.
