Ahead of Tuesday night’s Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United named their 25-man squad for the remainder of the 2020-21 Premier League campaign.Academy players, plus players under the age of 21, are not included in the main group.As a result, the likes of Mason Greenwood, Brandon Williams and summer signing Facundo Pellistri are not listed on the main list.However, there are two notable omissions.There is no place for either goalkeeper Sergio Romero or long-serving defender Phil Jones.
Romero, who was linked with moves to Everton and Aston Villa last month, has been at Old Trafford since 2015 after completing a move from Sampdoria.The Argentine goalkeeper has played 61 times for the Red Devils - winning the FA Cup, EFL Cup and Europa League - but now finds himself surplus to requirements after Dean Henderson returned from his loan spell at Sheffield United.According to ESPN’s Rob Dawson, Romero only discovered that he’d been left out of both the Champions League and Premier League squads via social media.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer always comes across as a fair and honest guy, but this feels rather harsh.Romero has always conducted himself with the utmost professionalism at United and deserves the club’s respect.
It’s unclear whether Jones, a United player since 2011, discovered his fate in the same way.
The 28-year-old defender, who was also omitted from United’s Champions League squad, is expected to leave Old Trafford when the transfer window reopens in January.
However, United will demand as much as £20 million for the England international, according to The Sun.
