Tottenham Hotspur are hoping to make a real statement this season.

After reaching the Champions League final in 2019 the hope was that the north London side could really kick on and establish themselves as one of Europe's top clubs.

Based on last season they're not there yet.

A sixth-place finish and another season with no silverware has left supporters feeling concerned - something which everyone is keen to address.

As a result Daniel Levy has clicked into gear.

After bringing in Jose Mourinho, the Spurs chief has made it his mission to close the gap on Premier League title challengers Liverpool and Manchester City.

A huge summer in the transfer market will certainly have helped.

Big-name deals to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Sergio Reguilon and Gareth Bale amongst others arrived at the club and that is seen as a big step in the right direction for Tottenham.

One man who is apparently thrilled is 'the special one' himself.

Football London reporter Alasdair Gold was reviewing the club's transfer activity when he gave some insight into just how pleased Mourinho is with the progress that's been made.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Gold said: "“He’s so happy.

"I was among those putting the questions to him yesterday at his press conference and it kind of solidified what I’d already been told by people behind the scenes at Tottenham that he is absolutely purring right now.

“He admitted it yesterday. He said – ‘I didn’t expect for us to go as far as we did in the transfer window.’ He said – ‘we’ve got so much quality in’ and the phrase that I love that he used, he said – ‘I look at the players and I see they’re excited but I also see they’re worried’ and he said – ‘I love that.’

“They’re excited at the quality in the squad and know that we can do big things but they’re also worried that they might not play and then that’s what drives them on and he said – ‘that’s what big clubs are and that’s what big clubs have.’ I just thought that was brilliant.”

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

Few can argue with just how impressive Tottenham have been this summer.

The signings that have been made certainly seem to have exceeded all expectations among supporters of the north London club.

But they mean nothing if Spurs can't pick up results.

The only thing that matters to Daniel Levy this term is finishing in the top four and ensuring that the team qualify for the Champions League.

If Tottenham are to really progress they need to be dining at Europe's top table.

That's why this season is so key for them, and while the summer business is encouraging, it can only really be judged at the end of the season.
