Tottenham Hotspur were one of the success stories of the transfer window.

After falling short of expectations last term there was a real need for the north London side to enter the market for additions.

Spurs duly delivered as they completed moves for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Matt Doherty, Joe Hart, Sergio Reguilon, Gareth Bale, Carlos Vinicius and Joe Rodon.

Signing a striker to rival Harry Kane was a top priority, and while it was Vinicius from Benfica who ultimately made the move, plenty of names were linked with the club.

One of those was Troy Deeney of Watford.

The Hornets' skipper was tipped to leave Vicarage Road after suffering relegation to the Championship, with a move to Tottenham tipped as a potential destination.

While a move didn't materialise, Deeney admits that talks were held as he reveals the story of the summer's interest.

Speaking to talkSPORT about the reported interest, Deeney said: "Yes, [it’s genuine].

“I’m 32. A lot of clubs were looking for a different style of striker as a backup. Obviously, everyone wants to play a certain way now.

“But when you get into certain moments then you need someone who can hold it up or go long if you’re losing, so yes there was a lot of talks. Some things materialised and some things didn’t.

“The ones that were getting closer then you start thinking ‘are you ready to go back to the Premier League to be a bit-part player?’ When you start getting into the mould of being a super-sub, you cannot really go back."

Asked if he spoke to Jose Mourinho, Deeney said: "I saw Jose at the Watford v Spurs game, pre-season. That’s all I say.

“When you get to Spurs, you know the difference between being at a lesser club and a big club with the big boys, so it’s a different experience. I think we all watched the Amazon thing and we was like ‘oh, I’d love to be there’. The training ground is ridiculous and the stadium is ridiculous.

“You want to test yourself as well. I am not going to go in there and say ‘I am better than Harry Kane’. Come on, we all know. I am a realist. It is what is. I know what I can deliver.”

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

This would have been a great move.

Troy Deeney is a player who certainly has a lot to offer at Premier League level - not to mention the fact that he's the sort of personality that you need in the top tier.

There's no doubt that Harry Kane would have been Spurs' main man in attack, but Deeney would certainly have added something different to the ranks.

It wouldn't be a surprise if Deeney was to return to the top flight at some point.

Whether that's with Watford or someone else, we'd love to see the striker back in the big time.
