Welcome to GIVEMESPORT's first instalment of the Brits Abroad feature.
Every week we'll be bringing you a comprehensive update on the 19 British players who are plying their trade on the continent in one of Europe's top four leagues - Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1.
The Premier League has become a billionaire's playground in recent years, and the astronomical sums of investment that have been pumped into the division have squeezed the number of opportunities available to the next generation of homegrown talent.
Consequently, there has been a tangible rise in the number of British players moving abroad to carve their careers in the game.
Jadon Sancho has been widely hailed as a pioneer of this snowballing trend, but he is just one of a collection of players from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland who are currently playing overseas.
Here, we take a look at how each of the 19 players have fared of late...
Bundesliga players:
Reece Oxford - Augsburg
Reece Oxford, a holding midfielder, hasn't elevated to the heights that were expected of him when he instantly rose to fame in 2015.
The West Ham trainee made his Premier League debut against Arsenal as a 16-year-old and stunned the footballing world with a phenomenal display, but he eventually left the club for Augsburg in August 2019 following a series of loan spells.
Oxford, now 21, was an unused substitute in Augsburg's 2-0 loss against RB Leipzig last weekend, though he did come off the bench in each of the German outfit's opening three league matches.
Ryan Sessegnon - Hoffenheim
Ryan Sessegnon followed in the footsteps of Reiss Nelson, who enjoyed fleeting moments of class under Julian Nagelsmann in the 2018/19 season, and made the loan switch from north London to Hoffenheim in the summer.
The 20-year-old will be hoping to kickstart a career that has stagnated since his transfer from Fulham to Tottenham Hotspur.
Last Saturday, Sessegnon was brought off the substitutes bench for the final 11 minutes against Borussia Dortmund but he could do nothing to change the outcome of the game as the visitors held on for a 1-0 win.
Jadon Sancho - Borussia Dortmund
The Brits Abroad poster boy is enduring something of a dry spell by his astronomically high standards.
Sancho has just one assist so far this campaign and is yet to register a goal.
That Lucien Favre opted to withdraw him after 64 minutes against Hoffenheim on Saturday, with the score still tied at 0-0, suggests that something is not quite as it should be following a summer of relentless media talk linking him with a move to Manchester United.
The England international did, however, play all 90 minutes in the Champions League clash with Lazio on Tuesday night, though he could do nothing to prevent the visitors from losing 3-1 in Rome.
Jude Bellingham - Borussia Dortmund
Jude Bellingham was left on the substitutes bench in Dortmund's narrow away win at Hoffenheim on Saturday, but he returned to the starting XI to make his Champions League debut against Lazio.
The 17-year-old's first taste of European action was cut short at half-time, however, with Lucien Favre opting to send Giovanni Reyna on in his place in a bid to overturn the two-nil deficit.
Record-breaking has been a theme of Bellingham's short career thus far, and his start on Tuesday added another to his collection as he became the youngest ever English player to start a Champions League match (aged 17 years and 113 days), overtaking Man City's Phil Foden in the process.
Clinton Mola - Stuttgart
Clinton Mola joined Stuggart from Chelsea in January 2020 and made eight appearances in Bundesliga II last season.
However, the left-back has been absent this season due to an ongoing hip injury and is yet to be selected in a matchday squad.
Jamal Musiala - Bayern Munich
Jamal Musiala, who left Chelsea for Bayern Munich in 2019, is beginning to generate plenty of interest from a wider footballing audience.
The 17-year-old's eye-catching style of mazy dribbling is bound to win him some admirers, and the fact he's already making Bundesliga appearances for Germany's most prestigious outfit tells you all you need to know about this prodigy.
Hans Flick sent Musiala on in place of Kingsley Coman in the 86th minute of Bayern's clash against Arminia Bielefeld, and could feature against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League opener this evening.
Rabbi Matondo - Schalke
Rabbi Matondo left Man City for Schalke in January 2019 but has struggled to make a profound impact in Gelsenkirchen thus far.
The 20-year-old winger was an unused substitute in Schalke's 1-1 draw with Union Berlin on Sunday.
Serie A:
Chris Smalling - AS Roma
Chris Smalling enjoyed a glowing loan spell with AS Roma in the 2019/20 season and made his stay permanent on transfer deadline day earlier this month.
He wasn't included in the squad to face Benevento at the weekend, though, and it remains to be seen when he'll make his second debut for the club.
Ronaldo Vieira - Hellas Verona
Can anyone really live up to a name like Ronaldo Vieira?
The 22-year-old central midfielder rose through the ranks at Leeds United's academy before moving on to Sampdoria in 2018, but he's yet to fully settle in the starting XI.
A summer loan switch to Hellas Verona alludes to his diminishing importance at Sampdoria, and he'll need to use the fresh opportunity to kickstart his career.
Vieira made his full debut against Genoa on Sunday, playing all 90 minutes in a fine all-action display which saw him record two key passes, one dribble and win three free-kicks for his side.
From a defensive perspective, meanwhile, he completed one tackle and one clearance, per Whoscored.
Ashley Young - Inter Milan
Ashley Young may well have been discarded by Manchester United but he continues to compete at the top level in European football.
The 35-year-old has enjoyed a revival under Antonio Conte, playing in wing-back roles on both the left and ride side of the Italian's revered system.
Having recently tested positive for coronavirus, Young was absent from the squad as Inter suffered a 2-1 defeat in the first Milan derby of the season last weekend.
Aaron Hickey - Bologna
One of Scotland's brightest young talents left Hearts for Serie A outfit Bologna during the summer window.
Aaron Hickey, a left-back by trade, has made a bright start to life with his new club, starting three consecutive fixtures.
The 18-year-old completed 90 minutes for the first time on Sunday during an enthralling 4-3 clash which Bologna ought to have won having been 3-1 up after 60 minutes.
Aaron Ramsey - Juventus
Aaron Ramsey was only used as a bit-part player during his maiden campaign at Juventus but Andrea Pirlo's ascent into the manager's hot seat may work in his favour.
Pirlo selected the Wales international in the starting XI for the Old Lady's opening two league fixtures before injury ruled him out of the next two.
However, Ramsey was back in the starting line-up on Tuesday night and played a key role in Juventus' 2-0 win away at Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League.
A delicious backheel to Dejan Kulusevski, whose saved effort was gobbled up by Alvaro Morata, provided the pre-assist for the opening goal, and his direct style of dribbling caused problems for the hosts all evening.
Per Whoscored, Ramsey completed three dribbles, three key passes and 84.2% of his passes on the night, earning a respectable rating of 7.17 for his performance.
Ligue 1:
Jonathan Panzo - Dijon
Another player in the long list of Chelsea graduates who've moved on to pastures new.
Jonathan Panzo joined Monaco in July 2018 but struggled to cement his place in the first team at Stade Louis II before moving to Dijon in the summer.
The 19-year-old, who has been capped three times by the England U21 side, made his fifth straight start of the season on Friday evening in a 1-1 draw with Stade Rennais and completed 90 minutes for the fourth consecutive game.
Panzo appears to be growing in stature within his new surroundings.
Trevoh Chalobah - FC Lorient
Trevoh Chalobah, like his brother Nathaniel, is another product of Chelsea's academy.
The 21-year-old holding midfielder moved to FC Lorient on a season-long loan deal this summer following a pair of productive Championship spells with Huddersfield Town and Ipswich.
He'll be looking to use the step up to the French top tier as an opportunity to impress Frank Lampard from afar, and his parent club will certainly be impressed by how he fared at the weekend.
Chalobah made his first start for the club against Stade Reims and provided a domineering screen in front of the back-four, making three tackles and completing an impressive seven interceptions during his 76 minutes on the field.
If he continues in that vein he's bound to win some admirers and potential suitors if he's eventually deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge, as is typically the case with the Blues' organically produced players.
Stephy Mavididi - Montpellier
Stephy Mavididi left Arsenal for Juventus in 2018 but his time with the Italian Goliath didn't last long.
Montpellier snapped up the centre-forward during the summer after watching the youngster bag eight goals in 28 games on loan at Dijon last season.
The 22-year-old was sent on at half-time during Montpellier's Ligue 1 clash with Monaco on Sunday and scored his first goal for the club just six minutes later, providing his manager with immediate vindication for the decision.
And it was a stunning strike too that showcased a handful of his core attributes.
Mavididi retrieved possession after chasing down a loose ball on the halfway line and, with Monaco's defence exposed, he scampered from the halfway line with the ball at his feet, held off a challenge from the covering defender and slammed the ball across the goalkeeper into the bottom left hand corner.
With that level of ruthlessness in front of goal, it shouldn't be long before he's a regular in the starting XI.
Mohamed Ali-Cho - Angers
Though Mohamed-Ali Cho - what a name by the way - was born in France, he has represented England at international level.
Despite being just 16 years of age, Cho has already played 77 minutes of Ligue 1 football for Angers this season, though he was an unused substitute in their 1-1 draw with Metz at the weekend.
Given his tender age, the tricky winger is one to keep an eye on as the season unravels.
Fraser Hornby - Stade Reims
Fraser Hornby is flying at international level but he's not hit the ground running in France just yet.
The 21-year-old striker recently became Scotland's all-time record goal scorer at U21 level, overtaking Jordan Rhodes at the top of the list with a hat-trick during a 7-0 rout against San Marino.
However, he was not even named in the Stade Reims' squad that lost 3-1 to FC Lorient on Saturday.
The towering 6ft 4 attacker has plenty of work to do in France.
La Liga:
Kieran Trippier - Atletico Madrid
Kieran Trippier has salvaged what was a stagnating career since leaving Tottenham Hotspur for Atletico Madrid.
The right-back has flourished under Diego Simeone's wing, and has played every minute of Atletico Madrid's La Liga campaign so far this season.
He delivered a solid display in a 2-0 away win at Celta Vigo on Saturday - a third consecutive clean sheet for Los Rojiblancos - and is likely to start their Champions League opener against current holders Bayern Munich this evening.
Yunus Musah - Valencia
Will Yunus Musa prove to be another superstar who Arsenal let slip through the net?
Musah moved from north London to Valencia in August 2019 and, at just 17 years of age, has already started to establish himself in the starting XI.
By virtue of both his raw ability and Valencia's ongoing financial problems, the right-sided midfielder has started four of Valencia's six La Liga games already this season.
Musah was relatively ineffective against Villarreal on Sunday as he failed to complete a key pass or dribble during the 2-1 defeat.
