Real Madrid found themselves 3-0 down at half-time against Shakhtar Donetsk in their Champions League group stage fixture on Wednesday evening.

Zinedine Zidane’s side were left stunned by their opponents, who were without 10 first-team players due to Covid-19, during the opening 45 minutes.

Tete broke the deadlock after 29 minutes before Raphael Varane’s own goal put the Ukrainian outfit 2-0 up. Manor Solomon then put the visitors into dreamland at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano by adding a third goal before the break.

Real Madrid responded shortly after the interval thanks to a screamer from Luka Modric.

Zidane then sent on Vinicius Junior in place of Luka Jovic - and it proved to be an inspired substitution.

Just seconds later - 14, to be precise - Vinicius scored Los Blancos’ second goal of the night.

Per statistician MisterChip, Vinicius’s goal is the fastest goal by a substitute in UEFA Champions League history.

The previous record (15 seconds) was jointly shared by Lars Ricken and Andy van der Meyde.

And Vinicius’s record-breaking goal proved to be little more than a consolation.

Shakhtar ended the match with their one-goal lead intact to seal a memorable victory in the Spanish capital.

Federico Valverde had the ball into the back of the net in stoppage time but his goal was ruled out following a VAR review.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, now head into Saturday’s Clasico against fierce rivals Barcelona off the back of two disappointing defeats against Cadiz and now Shakhtar.
