Premier League clubs spent an extraordinary £1.2 billion on transfers this summer.

Only in the wild, nonsensical world of English football could top-flight sides empty their coffers to such an extent during a historic financial crisis for the game.

Chelsea were the window's biggest spenders, bringing in seven first team players and breaking their transfer record to sign Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen.

However, they already had some catching up to do to match the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United.

The Mirror have given the full costs of every club's squad now that their 25-man lists have been announced.

Unsurprisingly, it makes eye-watering reading.

Arsenal made headlines by leaving Mesut Ozil out of their squad, but the Gunners still boast one of the most extravagant rosters.

20. Burnley - £82,600,000

Sean Dyche has done an incredible job, full stop. The Clarets' squad costs just a tenth of their most expensive top flight rivals'. It might not deliver pretty football, but it's impressive nonetheless.

19. Fulham - £94,350,000

It shows, doesn't it? Scott Parker's men have looked way out of their depth in the top tier and it's little wonder when they've received so little investment.

18. West Bromwich Albion - £97,700,000

At just £14.85m, Karlan Grant was the Baggies' biggest summer signing and even then, their squad still costs less than £100m.

17. Leeds United - £120,300,000

Marcelo Bielsa's side have more than held their own since winning promotion despite essentially still having a Championship squad.

16. Sheffield United - £120,700,000

Time will tell if Chris Wilder's side suffer a touch of second-season syndrome. Nobody would blame them if they did, the Blades' cut-price squad costing just £120m.

15. Crystal Palace - £149,860,000

Roy Hodgson is still operating with largely the same squad as last season, Eberechi Eze the only summer signing that breached the seven-figure mark.

14. Brighton & Hove Albion - £159,100,000

Graham Potter has shown that despite Brighton's limited budget, they are capable of more than just surviving.

13. Southampton - £170,550,000

Southampton might be better known for selling on their talent, but they have also constructed a decent squad with Jannik Vestergaard and Danny Ings the most expensive signings still at St Mary's.

12. Newcastle United - £198,100,000

Mike Ashley was never going to position the Magpies much higher up this list. For all the complaints against Steve Bruce's tactics, he is always working with one hand tied behind his back.

11. West Ham United - £218,500,000

Likewise, West Ham fans feel nothing but ire towards their owners - but the club haven't scrimped as much as some of their rivals.

10. Aston Villa - £229,350,000

From staying up by the skin of their teeth last term, Dean Smith's side look much improved this time around. The irony, of course, is that star man Jack Grealish is Villa born and bred and didn't cost a penny.

9. Wolverhampton Wanderers - £241,980,000

Wolves' business since the dawn of their Portuguese connection has raised plenty of eyebrows, dating back to their promotion-winning campaign. Regardless, Nuno has excelled with Wolves with the ninth most expensive squad in the top flight.

8. Leicester City - £317,450,000

For all the talk of the 'fairytale' in 2016, Leicester's transformation owes a lot to their business behind the scenes. That hasn't been strictly limited to transfers, though, as their owners have also poured funds into training facilities and scouting operations.

7. Tottenham Hotspur - £385,300,000

Spurs' marquee signing Gareth Bale did not cost them a penny in transfer fees, but it's a myth to claim that Jose Mourinho's side still operate on a shoestring. That said, Davinson Sanchez and Tanguy Ndombele are still the only members of their squad who cost in excess of £30m, so they have still punched well above their weight.

6. Everton - £388,050,000

It's not solely down to Carlo Ancelotti's prowess that the Toffees have been so impressive of late. Nine of the most expensive transfers in Everton's history are still at the club.

5. Liverpool - £454,250,000

Despite winning the league by 18 points last season, Liverpool still only have the fifth most expensive squad. Jurgen Klopp only needed to make minor tweaks this summer, Thiago Alcantara the headline signing.

4. Arsenal - £454,800,000

Even without Ozil, who cost £43m in 2013, Mikel Arteta is working with some top-priced talent. Nicolas Pepe, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Thomas Partey make up £222m of their squad's total outgoings.

3. Chelsea - £577,100,000

While operating under a transfer ban, it looked as though Frank Lampard was set to put his faith in the club's youngsters, but Chelsea have since reverted to form.

2. Manchester United - £628,130,000

Meanwhile, over at United, fans might well ask what they have to show for a squad that has cost over half a billion. Perhaps it's just as well they didn't add another £100m to the bill by bringing in Jadon Sancho.

1. Manchester City - £810,870,000

Inevitably, City have assembled the most expensive squad. Over the past decade, Sheikh Mansour has poured over £1bn into the club's transformation and many of those assets are still present in the dressing room.

Overall, Premier League clubs have spent a total of nearly £6billion to assemble their current squads.

And it ultimately goes to show the gulf between the division's haves and the have-nots.
