Dennis Bergkamp was a legend at Arsenal.

The Dutchman began his storied career at Ajax, making his debut in 1986 and staying until 1993 before a move to Inter Milan.

Two years in Italy saw him win the UEFA Cup before his move to the Gunners, costing £7.5m and becoming the club’s record signing in the process.

To say it went well would be an understatement.

He won the Premier League three times and also won four FA Cups, while being named the FWA Footballer of the Year, and the PFA Players’ Player of the Year in 1998.

He now has a statue outside the Emirates, showing him controlling the ball with his trademark guile and panache.

And now his son could be about to join the club.

Goal reports that the Gunners have handed a trial to Mitchel Bergkamp, who is 22, and that he could well end up joining their Under-23 side.

It’s fair to say that he hasn’t quite matched his father’s achievements so far in his career, as he is yet to play senior professional football.

The young attacking midfielder has only played for Almere City’s youth teams but he is now a free agent and could be snapped up for nothing by the Gunners.

Arsenal’s Under-23 side is not well-stocked with players, and the likes of Cedric Soares, Reiss Nelson, and William Saliba, normally first-team players, all played for them against Manchester United in their last fixture.

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

This is a classic case of nepotism.

There is absolutely nothing in Bergkamp Jr’s CV to suggest he is even remotely ready to be anywhere near an Arsenal shirt, apart from his surname.

And yet he’s training with the club, and could be drafted in because of the lack of bodies in the U23 set-up.

It bears repeating: he has never played proper professional football.

To sign him would be an absolute embarrassment.
