Kemar Roofe scored an absolute screamer for Rangers against Standard Liege last night.
The Englishman picked up the ball inside his own half, showed strength to hold off a player, went past another and then unleashed a ridiculous effort that powered into the net.
It was a goal that Steven Gerrard described as ‘the best goal he has seen live’.
“The goal was a moment of genius – a world-class moment,” he said, per Goal. “I have been playing football professionally since 1998 and it is the best goal I have ever seen live with my own eyes.
“He collects the ball 15 yards outside our box, he is strong for two challenges, he holds the player off with the third challenge and then he actually takes the player on in the worst conditions I’ve seen.
“And then, to have the vision, the power and the class to score from 55 yards – I don’t think I’ve seen a better goal and I don’t think I will see a better goal.”
Watch it below:
Truly extraordinary. On the back of Roofe’s goal, we’ve decided to rank it alongside some of the best goals of 2020.
We’ve done the research and selected 14 of the most ridiculous goals scored this year.
Of course, there have been thousands of goals scored around the world in 2020, so we may have missed one or two screamers.
14. Paulinho | FC MIDTTJYLLAND vs SonderjyskE | March 2, 2020
Paulinho (not the former Barcelona and Spurs midfielder) scored a howitzer in March.
He picked up the ball from the left and crashed a swerving effort into the top corner. The hit is made even more impressive given he’s a left-back.
His celebration was almost as good as the goal.
13. Toni Kroos | REAL MADRID vs Valencia | January 9, 2020
Kroos stunned the world when he scored directly from a corner in January.
It’s all well and good spotting the goalkeeper off his line, but to pull it off was something special.
12. Odion Ighalo | Lask vs MAN UNITED | March 12, 2020
Ighalo’s dreams came true in January when he completed a move to the club he adored as a child.
Within months, he was scoring screamers in a red shirt.
The Nigerian showed great close control before rifling an effort with his left foot into the top corner.
11. Antoine Griezmann | Villarreal vs BARCELONA | July 22, 2020
Griezmann has underwhelmed since his big money move to Barcelona, but he scored a superb goal against Villarreal in the summer.
The Frenchman scored a lovely chip after being set up by a Lionel Messi backheel.
Watch his goal below (at 0:28)
10. Hianga’a Mbock | Toulouse vs BREST | January 12, 2020
Mbock tried his luck from around 35 yards out and his dipping effort crashed in off the bar. What a lovely effort.
9. Ruben Neves | WOLVES vs Espanyol | February 20, 2020
Neves doesn’t get many goals, but when he does, they are usually bangers.
Back in February, the Wolves man chested the ball down before unleashing an incredible 30-yard volley. Insane.
8. Christian Santos | DEPORTIVO vs Huesca | July 5, 2020
Santos scored a ridiculous bicycle kick in the summer. Under pressure from a defender, he adjusted to the flight of the ball brilliantly and his effort looped into the top corner.
7. Leonardo Bittencourt | WERDER BREMEN vs Dortmund | February 4, 2020
Dortmund looked like they had survived when they cleared a corner.
But the ball fell to Bittencourt, who touched the ball down and produced a lovely half-volley that rose into the top corner.
6. André-Pierre Gignac | TIGRES vs Pumas | March 1, 2020
Gignac scored a hat-trick against Pumas back in March. His third was a quite incredible acrobatic goal which we don’t really know how to describe.
The man is 34 years old and still scoring bangers out in Mexico.
5. Manuel Lanzini | Tottenham vs WEST HAM | October 18, 2020
The context of this goal makes it so much better.
West Ham were 3-0 down with 10 minutes remaining. They pulled it back to 3-2 and had a corner in the last-minute.
Tottenham looked to have clung on to all three points when they cleared the danger.
But the ball fell to Lanzini, who smashed an unstoppable effort from 30 yards that hit both the bar and post before going in.
4. Irvin Cardona | STADE BRESTOIS vs Dijon | September 13, 2020
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a goal anything like this.
Cardona produced a goal straight out of Shaolin Soccer when he incredibly volleyed home at the back post.
The normal angle doesn’t do the goal justice. Just wait until you see the close ups.
3. Zlatko Junozovic | Rapid Wien vs SALZBURG | June 24, 2020
It was almost impossible to pick between the top three. You could argue that any of these are the best goal scored in 2020.
Junozovic scored a scorcher back in June when he connected perfectly from a corner.
His effort crashed in off the bar. He will never hit the ball any better than that.
2. Kemar Roofe | Standard vs RANGERS | October 22, 2020
Roofe’s goal was absolutely insane. But there was one goal scored in 2020 that I believe was even better…
1. Jordan Flores | Shamrock v DUNDALK | February 29, 2020
I’ve watched this goal so many times and I still can’t work out how Flores managed to score this.
Flores scored a ridiculous volley from a corner in February. He somehow managed to get his leg up to head height before making perfect contact on the ball. His effort lasered past the goalkeeper with some ferocity.
I doubt we’ll ever see a goal like this ever again.
