Manchester United welcome Chelsea to Old Trafford on Saturday evening in a clash that pits two Premier League icons against one another in their respective technical areas.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Frank Lampard both enjoyed excellent playing careers but question marks linger over their managerial credentials.

Solskjaer, in particular, has been under major scrutiny for almost the entirety of his tenure, while Lampard's summer spending spree naturally places greater expectation on his side to achieve immediate success.

Both managers will be expected to lead their sides to top four finishes this season, but who has the superior tools at their disposal?

Well, in order to begin answering that question, here at GIVEMSPORT we've created a combined United and Chelsea XI ahead of their Saturday night showdown.

Take a look at our selection below...

GK: David de Gea

De Gea

We're not spoilt for choice with goalkeepers here and David de Gea gets the nod for what he's capable of rather than his recent form.

De Gea hit a metaphorical iceberg around the time of the 2018 World Cup and has failed to fix the sinking ship ever since.

Kepa Arrizabalaga's shortcomings require little introduction and we haven't yet seen enough of Edouard Mendy in the Premier League to analyse his potential.

RB: Reece James

Reece James

That Reece James has been selected over Trent Alexander-Arnold at international level attests to his immense ability.

Boasting a blend of defensive nous and forward-thinking intuition, with slight shades of David Beckham in his delivery from wide areas, the 20-year-old is a class above Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

In this back-five, James was the most straightforward selection.

CB: Kurt Zouma

Zouma

Which of the lesser evils do you go for?

United and Chelsea's squads are littered with centre-backs who roughly fit into three categories: hopelessly out of form; potentially top quality but maybe just flattering to deceive; actually just not very good.

As a result, we summoned every ounce of logic and opted for two players in the middle category.

Kurt Zouma has all the hallmarks of a colossal central defender, yet the mistake that gifted Southampton their second goal last weekend proved he's still far from the finished article.

Despite that, the France international has shown enough in the Premier League to justify his selection here.

CB: Victor Lindelof

Lindelof

Another player who seems to always be a mistake away from sabotaging his own reputation, yet one who has gradually risen in stature at Old Trafford and is generally consistent at the heart of defence.

Lindelof's oddly tenuous standing is more symptomatic of United's own problems than his ability, and its no coincidence that his absence from the starting XI coincided with the recent 6-1 humbling against Tottenham Hotspur.

On paper, this place really should be reserved for Maguire but Slabhead's recent demise speaks for itself.

LB: Ben Chilwell

Ben Chilwell

Ben Chilwell looks like becoming the quality player everyone expected Luke Shaw to be.

Providing natural width on the left flank and an ever-present threat on the front foot, Chilwell has enjoyed a promising start to his Chelsea career.

Doubts persist over his defensive positioning but that is often an inevitable sacrifice the best attacking full-backs need to make to maximise their prowess in the attacking third.

CM: N'Golo Kante

Kante

The N'Golo Kante hype is slowly diminishing but that is a testament to his incredible consistency rather than an indicator of a major dip in form.

We are so accustomed to Kante's scuttling efforts to extinguish fires in front of the back-four that the value he adds often evades our notice.

But the one-time PFA award winner, who cost Chelsea just £30m, is still an extraordinary talent in his own right and was one of the first names on this team sheet.

CM: Paul Pogba

Pogba

No matter what Solskjaer's recent selections may lead us to believe, you just can't leave £89m star Paul Pogba out the team.

With Kante diligently protecting space in the midfield, Pogba would be free to showcase his playmaking talent.

Stick your reservations on a postcard.

CAM: Bruno Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes

Another inclusion that was never in doubt.

Bruno Fernandes has changed the game at United since signing for an initial £47m fee and offers an unrivalled combination of attributes in attacking midfield.

The prospect of seeing Fernandes link up with Pogba, Kante and the electric front-three detailed below would be frightening for even the world's most complete defensive unit.

RW: Christian Pulisic

Pulisic

Injuries have played their part in a rather stop-start career at Chelsea thus far but Christian Pulisic, 22, is clearly the real deal.

The USA international exceeded expectations by notching nine goals and providing six assists in an outstanding maiden Premier League campaign.

An outstanding dribbler with lethal end product, Pulisic is beginning to blossom into the player his formative years hinted he'd become.

LW: Marcus Rashford

Rashford

If Marcus Rashford isn't busy holding politicians to account and using his platform to improve millions of lives then you're likely to find him teasing defenders on the left side of United or England's attack.

The 22-year-old still lacks a touch of consistency but there's no denying his capacity to cause serious damage with a dazzling dribble or thunderbolt strike from long range.

There's no place for Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, Anthony Martial or even Hakim Ziyech here.

CF: Timo Werner

Werner

At the spearhead of the attack we have Timo Werner, otherwise known as "Turbo Werner" back in his native Germany.

The jet-heeled sensation plays with the energy of a hyper-charged Duracell bunny and takes some stopping once he's in full flow.

Veteran forward Edinson Cavani and the merucial Martial never stood a chance of pipping Werner in the selection process here.
