Nine years ago today, one of the Premier League's biggest shocks occurred in the heart of Manchester.

Old Trafford, normally Sir Alex Ferguson's fortress, was the setting for the United icon's darkest hour in charge of the club.

Roberto Mancini's City side were to inflict the most humiliating defeat of the Scotsman's career on the way to their first ever Premier League title.

Come the final whistle, the score board read 6-1 to the away side, Mario Balotelli (x2), Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko (x2) and David Silva grabbing the sextet of goals.

City's ruthless response to Jonny Evans' 47th-minute red card is forever etched into the fabrics of the Premier League, so much so that Darren Fletcher's stunning 81st-minute goal has been reduced to a mere footnote.

The Old Trafford scoreboard

So what's happened to the squads that took to the Old Trafford field and dugouts that cold October afternoon? Well, we here at GIVEMESPORT decided to found out.

Unsurprisingly, only three of the players mentioned below are still with either United or City...

Man Utd

GK - David De Gea (Man Utd)

One of the three left standing. De Gea is still United's number one, but his stock in the footballing world has lost a considerable amount of value over the past two years.

RB - Chris Smalling (AS Roma)

The Englishman completed a permanent move to Roma this summer after spending the 2019/20 season on loan at the Serie A club. He probably would have been United's best centre-back had he stayed...

CB - Rio Ferdinand (Retired)

What a horrible day nine years ago was for one of the Premier League's greatest ever defenders. After a season with QPR in 2014/15, the Englishman called time on his glittering professional career.

CB - Jonny Evans (Leicester)

The Northern Irishman's red card kickstarted United's mauling, but he remained a Red Devils player until 2015. He's spent the last two seasons at Leicester after a successful three-year spell at West Brom between 2015 and 2018.

LB - Patrice Evra (Retired)

Evra left United in 2014 and then enjoyed a stellar three years with Juventus. The Frenchman retired in 2018 after a brief, uneventful spell at West Ham and he's now an emotionally-charged pundit on Sky Sports.

RM - Nani (Orlando City)

The enigmatic Portuguese failed to settle at a European club after leaving United in 2015, with below-par spells coming at Fenerbahce, Valencia, Lazio and Sporting Lisbon. The 33-year-old does now appear to be finding his feet again out in Florida with Orlando City.

CM - Darren Fletcher (Free agent)

The scorer of United's solitary goal in the 6-1 thrashing departed Old Trafford in 2015 for West Brom, before a move to Stoke in 2017. The 36-year-old is now without a club, but surprisingly he hasn't officially announced his retirement as of yet.

CM - Anderson (Retired)

One of United's many expensive flops departed the north of England on a permanent basis in 2015, returning to Brazil with Internacional. Anderson spent the 2018/19 season with Turkish side Adana Demirspor and then unexpectedly retired from the game at the age of just 31.

LM - Ashley Young (Inter Milan)

The former Aston Villa winger-turned-defender remained a United player until January of this year, at which time he completed a move to Antonio Conte's Inter Milan. Young's doing pretty well out in Italy, scoring four goals in 18 Serie A games last season.

ST - Wayne Rooney (Derby County)

United's record goal scorer remained at Old Trafford until 2017, after which he re-joined boyhood club Everton. Rooney then spent a successful period out in the US with DC United between 2018 and 2020, before moving to Championship side Derby as a player-coach.

ST - Danny Welbeck (Brighton)

Welbeck swapped Manchester for north London in 2014, but the Englishman was hampered by serious injuries at Arsenal. The striker recently signed for Brighton on a free transfer after having his Watford contract terminated by mutual consent.

SUB - Anders Lindegaard (Helsingborgs IF)

The Dane was used sparingly during his five years at United and he eventually moved to West Brom in 2015. The 36-year-old is now back in Denmark after failed stints with Preston North End and Burnley between 2016 and 2019.

SUB - Phil Jones (Man Utd)

How Jones is still a United player is beyond us. The error-prone defender was recently omitted from United's 25-man Premier League squad and it seems all but a certainty that the 28-year-old will be departing Old Trafford in January.

SUB - Dimitar Berbatov (Retired)

The 2011/12 season was the Bulgarian's last as a United player. He moved to Fulham in the summer of 2012 and the ice-cold striker ended his career six years later after a campaign with Indian side Kerala Blasters.

SUB - Park Ji-sung (Retired)

Ferguson's Mr Dependable left United after the conclusion of the 2011/12 season and joined fellow Premier League outfit QPR. Park then secured a move to PSV Eindhoven on loan for the 2013/14 campaign, after which he announced his retirement.

Park with QPR

SUB - Javier Hernandez (LA Galaxy)

The Mexican's move to MLS really hasn't gone to plan after leaving Sevilla back in January. In 10 league games during 2020 with LA Galaxy, Chicharito has scored just one goal. Maybe he needs to return to the Premier League...

SUB - Fabio (Nantes)

Rafael's twin brother left United in 2014 for Cardiff and he became a fan favourite in the Welsh capital. The Brazilian then opted to sign for Middlesbrough in 2016, where he found the going slightly tougher, as he has done since moving to Nantes in 2018.

SUB - Antonio Valencia (L.D.U. Quito)

The two-time United Players' Player of the Year departed the club last summer after 10 years of quality service, returning to his native Ecuador. Valencia and L.D.U. Quito won the inaugural Copa Ecuador tournament in 2019.

Man City

GK - Joe Hart (Tottenham)

Hart is still going in the Premier League as Spurs' second-choice 'keeper, but the 33-year-old is unlikely to ever recapture the sparkling form he showed at City.

RB - Micah Richards (Retired)

In 2011, it really looked like Richards was on the path to Premier League superstardom. Sadly, injuries took their toll and his career ended with a whimper at Aston Villa. He's now smashing it as a pundit on Sky Sports, though.

Richards with Villa

CB - Vincent Kompany (Retired)

City's greatest defender of the Premier League era. Kompany officially retired from the professional game this year after a brief spell as player-manager of Belgian side Anderlecht.

CB - Jolen Lescott (Retired)

Lescott's career took a turn for the worse in his latter years. We had the infamous 'pocket text gate' at Aston Villa, followed by miserable spells at AEK Athens and Sunderland. He confirmed his retirement in 2017.

LB - Gael Clichy (Free agent)

The former Arsenal left-back spent the 2019/20 season in Turkey with Istanbul Basaksehir, making 31 appearances in the Super Lig. The 35-year-old is now searching for a new club and it's surprising that no one appears to be willing to take a gamble on the Frenchman.

Clichy with Basaksehir

RM - James Milner (Liverpool)

Still one of the most dependable players in the Premier League, Milner played a key role in Liverpool's title-winning campaign in 2019/20. The 34-year-old certainly isn't making any retirement plans right now.

CM - Gareth Barry (Retired)

The Premier League's most-capped player joined Everton on a permanent basis from City in 2014, before a move to West Brom in 2017. After helping guide the Baggies back into the top-flight, Barry announced his retirement back in August at the age of 39.

CM - Yaya Toure (Free agent)

The man who pretty much single-handedly dragged City to the 2013/14 title is still an active player, having most recently played out in China with Qingdao Huanghai. Who wouldn't want to see the 37-year-old make a triumphant return to English football, eh?

Toure in action

LM - David Silva (Real Sociedad)

The man often referred to as 'City's greatest ever player' departed the club this summer to join Sociedad. Silva was incredible in the 6-1 win over United and his half-volleyed pass for Dzeko will forever remain one of the Premier League's greatest ever assists.

ST - Sergio Aguero (Man City)

Aguero is the only City player to feature nine years ago that remains with the club to this very day. The Argentine now has 180 Premier League goals to his name and will be targeting the 200 mark in the near future.

ST - Mario Balotelli (Free agent)

The man who's celebration defined United 1-6 City is now without a club after parting ways with Italian outfit Brescia following the team's relegation from Serie A in 2019/20. Balotelli has never come close to fulfilling even half of his immeasurable potential.

SUB - Costel Pantilimon (Denizlispor)

The Romanian 'keeper has lived a journeyman career since leaving City in 2014, playing for the likes of Sunderland, Watford and Nottingham Forest. The 6'8" 33-year-old is now out in Turkey after spending part of 2020 on loan at Cypriot side Omonia.

SUB - Pablo Zabaleta (Retired)

The Argentine full-back announced his retirement from the professional game last week after leaving West Ham in the summer. Zabaleta spent nine years at City, winning six trophies with the club.

SUB - Edin Dzeko (AS Roma)

A key contributor in City's 11/12 title-winning campaign, the Bosnian striker departed northern England in 2015, joining Roma on loan. He then completed a permanent move to the Italian side the following year and he's still one of the best strikers in Serie A.

Dzeko with Roma

SUB - Aleksandar Kolarov (Inter Milan)

The Serbian full-back was a key man at times during his seven years at City, but left in 2017 for AS Roma when it was clear he would rarely feature under Pep Guardiola. Kolarov joined Conte's Inter Milan this summer on a one-year deal.

SUB - Samir Nasri (Free agent)

The four years since Nasri left City have been tumultuous - to say the least. Off-field issues and failed spells at Sevilla, Antalyaspor, West Ham and Anderlecht have seen the Frenchman's career nosedive dramatically. You wouldn't be surprised if the 33-year-old called time on his playing days sooner rather than later.

SUB - Kolo Toure (Retired)

Toure is now a first-team coach at Leicester after his spells as a player with Liverpool and Celtic following his City departure in 2013. Will we see the Ivorian in a managerial role at some point in the not too distant future?

Toure with Leicester

SUB - Nigel de Jong (Al-Shahania)

The Dutch defensive midfielder has played all over the world since leaving City in 2012, featuring for AC Milan, LA Galaxy, Galatasaray and Mainz. The combative 35-year-old is now plying his trade out in Qatar.
