It's a frustrating time to be a Newcastle United supporter.

Historically one of the biggest clubs in England, fans have ambitions of returning to their former glory and challenging at the top end of the Premier League.

Mike Ashley's ownership of the club hasn't been a resounding success as far as the fanbase are concerned with a lack of investment being seen as a key reason behind the club's ongoing mediocrity.

However a glimmer of light emerges in the last year that promised to take the club back to their former glory.

A consortium made of of Amanda Staveley's PCP Partners and the Saudi group PIF promised to make Newcastle among the richest clubs in world football if their £300million takeover went through.

A deal was agreed but just needed to be signed off by the Premier League - a formality that never materialised.

Since then supporters have been enraged by the lack of clarity over the situation.

But a fresh update may just give fans a glimmer of hope.

Sky Sports have reported that Jamie Reuben has stepped down from his position on the Queens Park Rangers board.

The financier was set to become a boardmember at Newcastle United if the proposed takeover had gone through, with him and his father agreeing to a 10% stake in the club.

It's claimed that Reuben's decision was made 'out of respect' to the QPR supporters.

While it's not thought that such a decision has a direct link to matters at St James' Park, it will certainly get supporters talking about the potential for a revived takeover bid in the future.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

The proposed takeover has been a really sore subject in recent months.

After the highs of being tipped to become one of the richest clubs in world football Newcastle fans were left picking up the pieces of a broken dream.

To start the new season under the ownership of Mike Ashley was heartbreaking - particularly given how close they were to getting a deal done.

Whether that takeover will be revisited, I'm not sure.

Jamie Reuben's decision to step down from the QPR board will certainly get fans talking, but I don't think it means that any good news is imminent for Newcastle fans.
