An emotional Khabib Nurmagomedov announced his retirement from MMA after defeating Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 on Saturday night.Nurmagomedov needed less than two rounds to beat Gaethje to retain his lightweight title in Abu Dhabi. And after the fight, the 29-0 star placed his gloves on the canvas and announced that he would be retiring after honouring the memory of his father.Nurmagomedov’s father, Abdulmanap, passed away in July following complications arising from Covid-19. Abdulmanap was his coach and mentor, too."It was my last fight. There's no way I'm going to come here without my father," he said inside the octagon."It was the first time after what happened with my father, when the UFC called me about (fighting) Justin, I talked with my mother for three days."She didn't want me to fight without father, but I promised her it was going to be my last fight, and if I give my word, I have to follow this. It was my last fight here.”
Dillon Danis deletes Khabib tweet
Watching the Russian break down as he celebrated his win while remembering his father was hugely emotional.
However, Conor McGregor’s teammate Dillon Danis attempted to hijack the moment on Twitter.
Danis and Nurmagomedov clashed after the lightweight champion defeated McGregor at UFC 229 in 2018.
And Danis said the real reason Nurmagomedov is walking away from MMA is because he’s afraid of McGregor.
“Khabib is retiring because he’s scared of @TheNotoriousMMA,” Danis wrote.
The Bellator welterweight, who trains with McGregor, quickly deleted the tweet, but not before screenshots were taken and shared on social media.
That’s a serious lack of class.
Even McGregor shows Nurmagomedov respect in the wake of his retirement.
“Good performance @TeamKhabib,” McGregor tweeted. “Respect and condolences on your father again also. To you and family.”
Here's how others reacted to Danis' tweet.
