Luke Shaw was so impressive at Southampton that many people thought he would become England’s first-choice left-back for the next decade. And it was no surprise when Manchester United sealed the defender’s services in the summer of 2014 for a fee in the region of £30 million.United fans were thrilled with Shaw’s arrival but, six years later, it’s fair to say the full-back has failed to fulfil his huge potential so far.Perhaps things would have been different had Shaw not suffered that awful double leg fracture in September 2015.The defender deserves credit for coming back from that career-threatening injury and we’ve seen glimpses of brilliance from him in recent seasons. But there’s a reason why Ole Gunnar Solskjaer splashed out £15 million on Alex Telles earlier this month.p1elfl4plk13du1ld3b7c4fvco4n.jpgTelles, 27, earned praise from United fans on social media with his performance in last week’s 2-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes. The Brazilian played with intensity, while his delivery from crosses and corners was particularly impressive.p1elfl5fa62m718eu1v56v83d0jq.jpgHowever, Solskjaer reverted to Shaw for Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Chelsea, much to the frustration of some United fans.In particular, there was one moment from the left-back towards the end of the second half that angered United supporters. As Bruno Fernandes received the ball just outside the box on the left, the Portuguese midfielder gestured for Shaw to overlap.p1elflaeqhtub15911g3t1uvt1ivmu.jpgThis would have taken N’Golo Kante away and may have eventually led to a goalscoring opportunity for the home side.Instead, Shaw stood still and with his arms out. Bruno’s request had been ignored.Rather than passing the ball to Shaw, Fernandes instead passed to Fred.Watch the clip here…

United fans who have seen the club are far from impressed…

This clip brings back memories of the times Jose Mourinho criticised Shaw’s footballing intelligence during his spell as Man Utd manager.

"I think he has to change his football brain,” Mourinho said in 2017. “I was telling him just now, he was doing things in the second half because he was reacting to my voice. If he was playing on the other side, for sure he would not do it because I was not there to think for him.

"He needs maturity and maturity comes with responsibility.”
