Last season, Liverpool were dubbed ‘LiVARpool’ after a number of VAR decisions went their way.This season, however, couldn’t be more different.Jurgen Klopp’s side felt they were extremely hard done by in last week's Merseyside Derby as VAR failed to send off Jordan Pickford for his shocking tackle on Virgil van Dijk, while it ruled out what would have been an injury-time winner from Jordan Henderson after Sadio Mane was adjudged to be offside in the build-up.One week on and VAR did Liverpool absolutely no favours once again.In their home clash against Sheffield United, VAR awarded the away side a penalty for Fabinho’s tackle on Oliver McBurnie. The tackle not only appeared to be outside of the penalty area but the Brazilian also seemed to win the ball.
After Roberto Firmino had equalised in the first half, Mohamed Salah looked to have given Liverpool the lead in the 62nd-minute as he brought down Trent Alexander-Arnold’s expertly before volleying the ball home.It was an incredible goal but VAR had other ideas and ruled it out as the Egyptian was inches offside.Diogo Jota did give Liverpool the lead and, ultimately, the win but we were denied an absolute stunner from Salah thanks to the spoilsport that is VAR.
And it got us thinking: What other amazing goals have we been denied in football history?Therefore, we decided to find 11 of the greatest goals in football history that have been disallowed and wiped from the history books.Let’s take a look:
11 | Mohamed Salah | Liverpool vs Sheffield United
As we’ve already explained, Salah’s disallowed goal vs Sheffield United was absolutely brilliant. The movement, the touch, the volley. So, so good. VAR had to interfere and ruined it all for him though, didn’t it?
10 | Frank Lampard | England vs Germany
Okay, this wasn’t strictly ‘disallowed’ but we were denied a brilliant Frank Lampard equaliser against Germany in the last-16 clash of the 2010 World Cup. It was a goal that led to the acceleration of goalline technology.
9 | Cristiano Ronaldo | Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich
This isn’t the only time Cristiano Ronaldo features in this list. This time, his brilliant left-footed half volley was ruled out after he was adjudged to have controlled it with his arm. Did he? Hmmmm replays are inconclusive.
8 | Gareth Bale | Real Madrid vs PSG


This would have shut a few critics up. Bale scored an incredible goal in the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain as he juggled the ball four times before lobbing Keylor Navas. Unfortunately, he handled the ball just before he shot.
7 | Thiago Silva | PSG vs Nice
Thiago Silva doesn’t score many so he must have been fuming when this one got chalked out. The defender picked the ball up on the halfway line and played a one-two with Zlatan Ibrahimovic. However, he was forced wide by the Swede as the ball appeared to be running out for a goal-kick. With the ball right on the touchline, Silva somehow produced an effort with the outside of his root that span in. Replays suggest the ball MIGHT have just been out.
6 | Pedro Mendes | Tottenham vs Manchester United
Again, this wasn’t exactly ‘disallowed’ but, once again, we were denied an outrageous goal. From near the halfway line in the final few minutes at Old Trafford, Mendes attempted to lob Roy Carroll with a shot that went into orbit. Carroll got himself under the ball but fumbled it and it bounced yards into his own goal. Somehow the goal wasn’t given.
5 | Leigh Griffiths | Hibs vs Hearts
Imagine being denied a 40-yard free-kick against your club’s biggest rivals despite it bouncing miles over the line. Even worse when the match ended 0-0. Poor, Leigh Griffiths.
4 | Dani Osvaldo | Roma vs Leece
This probably would have been Dani Osvaldo’s best goal of his career…but for the offside flag. It was an incredible overhead kick and the commentator takes about 30 seconds to even realise it was offside. The worst thing? He was clearly onside…
3 | Cristiano Ronaldo | Portugal vs Azerbaijan
Cristiano Ronaldo spent many years trying to score an overhead kick but he actually achieved in all the way back in 2006 against Azerbaijan. Deco’s nonchalant shoulder pass was chested by Ronaldo before he produced an incredible overhead kick that went in off the underside of the bar. The only problem was that goalline technology wasn’t around back then and it wasn’t given.
2 | Cheick Tiote | Newcastle vs Man City
The late Cheick Tiote will always be remembered for his incredible left-footed volley that helped Newcastle come from 4-0 down to draw 4-4 with Arsenal. But he produced a similarly brilliant strike with the same left foot against Manchester City. It was disallowed for Newcastle players standing in front of goalkeeper Joe Hart - not that he would have got anywhere near it.

We wonder if Ronaldo has forgiven Nani yet…
Back in 2010, he sent Gerard Pique to the shops with a brilliant dummy before rolling the ball under his foot and scooping it over Iker Casillas. It was already probably over the line when Nani made sure by heading it in. The assistant referee flagged Nani offside and the goal was disallowed - even though Nani was probably onside in the first place. Ronaldo was fuming.
