Donny van de Beek's £40m move to Manchester United has been a slow burner - to say the least.

The former Ajax midfielder is yet to start a Premier League game for the Red Devils, playing just 61 minutes in the English top-flight this season.

Van de Beek's only two starts came in the Carabao Cup, two games in which he impressed the majority of United fans.

As such, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reluctance to play the Dutchman has baffled supporters, with Van de Beek an unused substitute during last Saturday's 0-0 draw with Chelsea.

United's midfield is crying out for both an injection of creativity and an additional goal threat, two things the Dutchman would bring to the table.

Van de Beek was an unused substitute vs Chelsea

He's even showcased those attributes in his limited game time during 2020/21 with the Red Devils and the Dutch national team, as the below video from KaiiZoFilms illustrates perfectly.

After watching the footage, it's almost impossible not to think that Solskjaer's insistence on playing Scott McTominay and Fred ahead of Van de Beek is wrong.

Van de Beek's 2020/21 highlights

The guy's one-touch passing is superb, while his ability to carry the ball forward from deep and put opposing defences on the back foot is exactly what United need.

Now, many have suggested that Van de Beek and the talismanic Bruno Fernandes cannot play in the same XI, due to the fact that they occupy similar spaces on the pitch.

But that theory is preposterous, as the Dutchman spent a hefty chunk of his Ajax career playing in a deeper midfield role.

So why can't he do so at United with Fernandes playing ahead of him? Because right now, Fred and McTominay as a partnership behind the Portuguese is simply too pragmatic.

Van de Beek in action

Van de Beek can easily replicate the defensive work rate of either player, but he also offers so much more in the final third - as the aforementioned video highlighted.

United are at their best when they attack from all angles and put teams to the sword. However, that's only possible if Van de Beek is playing.
