Former British F1 driver David Coulthard does not understand why current World Champion Lewis Hamilton has not received a knighthood following his unbelievable success in the sport.Coulthard, who was runner-up in the Drivers' World Championship for McLaren back in 2001, has claimed he is baffled at why Hamilton’s accolades within the sport of motor racing have not been further acknowledged.Speaking on a BBC Radio 5 Live breakfast show this week, Coulthard said: “He is a global ambassador for Britain.“We’ve got a true World Championship in Formula One. We’ve got Lewis there, proudly holding the Union Jack above his head.”Hamilton secured a record-breaking 92nd Grand Prix victory in Portugal this past weekend, which surpassed German Formula One great Michael Schumacher’s 14-year record number of wins.Speaking following the race, Hamilton said: “I could only ever have dreamed to have been where I am today. I didn’t have a magic ball when I chose to come to this team and partner with these great people, but here I am.”This latest victory also moved the Brit ever closer to equalling the German’s remarkable haul of seven world titles.

Despite his impressive achievements within the sport, he has still yet to receive the accolade of a knighthood, which is something that long distance runner Mo Farah and tennis star Andy Murray received in 2017.

To date, Hamilton has been awarded an MBE, which he received following his first World Championship victory in 2008.

In addition to his racing achievements, Hamilton has also championed causes such as the Black Lives Matter movement and has been very vocal in the fight against racism within society. Indeed, Hamilton wore a facemask with the phrase ‘Black Lives Matter’ as he celebrated his historic victory in Portugal on the podium. He also took the knee with other drivers before the Austrian Grand Prix back in July.

Hamilton is now considered to be joint favourite to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award alongside Marcus Rashford, who has played an active role in the free school meals campaign.
