They say in sport it is always best to go out at the top; Khabib Nurmagomedov has certainly achieved that.
After making his shock retirement immediately after forcing Justin Gaethje to submit during just the second round of their UFC 254 unification bout on Saturday, the Russian implored president Dana White to be made number one.
His claims to the throne appear to have been heard.
Notching his 29th win without defeat, an infographic emerged on Tuesday with 'The Eagle' unveiled as the new pound-for-pound king, something he took great pride in as he posted it on his official Instagram account.
The 32-year-old, who elected to hang up his gloves after his father's passing, stated the feat was the 'work of my life', adding he had grafted for everything.
The Russian said in an Instagram post: "It was work of my life, I never got anything easy, and nothing was given to me because I’m nice guy."
Khabib also paid tribute to his father and coach Abdulmanap, who invested so much time in his son's rise in UFC.
"Hard work, hope for Allah and patience, this three ingredient helps me to get successful, and of course, control and advises from my Father, who invested in me a lot of time and work."
Nurmagomedov leaves the sport at the top of the rankings, ahead of former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, with middleweight holder Israel Adesanya as number three.
Before having replaced Jones as UFC top dog, the American was vocal regarding Khabib's claims to the number one spot after his dominant victory over Gaethje this weekend.
Jones still protests over his only existing loss via disqualification to Matt Hamill back in 2009, for what were ruled illegal blows.
Despite his public protestations, however, few could surely dispute Nurmagomedov's status as the best pound-for-pound fighter.
Indeed, Khabib can now legitimately lay claim to being the GOAT of UFC.
