Hell in a Cell threw us a massive curveball on Sunday night.

In the main event, Drew McIntyre defended his WWE Championship inside the demonic structure against Randy Orton.

After beating The Viper at two previous PPV events, many expected the titleholder to leave with his belt once again.

But that didn't happen. Instead, Orton walked out of Hell in a Cell a 14-time world champion.

Their match was an epic too, with the pair entwined in a violent battle that lasted for over half an hour.

McIntyre and Orton went to war inside the ring, outside the cell and at one point they even brawled on top of the structure, which led to the champion taking a fall through the announce desk from high.

All that was building up to a finale which saw The Viper catch Drew with an RKO, securing the pinfall victory.

Orton and McIntyre brawled at HIAC

In the blink of an eye, Orton became a 14-time world champion.

But it's a booking decision that has raised eyebrows amongst fellow superstars backstage.

According to Fightful Select, many members of the roster are 'confused' by the timing of Orton's title win, especially considering he suffered back-to-back PPV defeats.

He's also been putting over the likes of AJ Styles, Kofi Kingston and McIntyre recently, but will now go on to clash with Roman Reigns at Survivor Series.

Orton has put over superstars recently

While The Viper will now turn his attention to a match with SmackDown's top star, it's unclear who his first WWE Championship defence will come against on RAW.

It's possible that his feud with McIntyre will continue - especially as Monday's show went off-air with the pair brawling at ringside.

But 'The Fiend' Bray Wyatt has also been teased as a possible opponent, given he was watching on as all the action unfolded on RAW.
