Manchester United's summer transfer window was decidedly underwhelming compared to some of their rivals.

While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was able to bring in Donny van de Beek, the Dutchman has been used sparingly.

Alex Tellas and Edinson Cavani then followed late in the market, but in truth, United wasted much of the window pursuing Jadon Sancho to no avail.

It's clear that despite their defensive frailties, Solskjaer is still keen to bring in another attacking midfielder.

And according to Bild journalist Christian Falk, they've already identified the very man.

Hakan Çalhanoğlu's AC Milan contract comes to an end in June 2021 and the Red Devils are already said to be in "concrete negotiations" with the 26-year-old.

The Turkish international has been impressive in Serie A since moving to the San Siro from Bayer Leverkusen three years ago.

It's that background which might explain why the story has first cropped up in Germany.

Çalhanoğlu, who has scored 27 goals and provided 40 assists in his 127 games so far, is keen to stay with the Rossoneri, but he will be free to talk to clubs outside Italy from January.

The Premier League could therefore be his next destination, with Falk claiming the player has turned down interest from Andrea Pirlo's Juventus.

United are hoping for better luck thanks to an offer of over £100,000-a-week.

Milan have seen their own extension, tabled at £54,000-a-week snubbed, so Ed Woodward is planning to double those figures as part of a five-year deal.

It would be a huge coup for Solskjaer and one which would bolster United's already potent attacking options even further.
