Manchester United vs Arsenal isn’t the rivalry it used to be.Decades ago, the two clubs used to go head-to-head for Premier League titles with Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson developing a genuine dislike for each other. Then there was the battle between captains Patrick Vieira and Roy Keane. And the most unforgettable battle between the two came 15 years ago.Of course, we’re talking about the infamous tunnel clash at Highbury before a match between the two sides. In the tightly packed tunnel in north London ahead of kick-off, Keane and Vieira almost came to blows and had to be calmed down by referee Graham Poll before walking out onto the pitch.

But what really happened?

Well, we’ve dug out quotes from all the people involved to tell the whole story.

In a Channel 5 documentary, 'Fergie vs Wenger: The Feud,’ referee Poll along with Paul Scholes and Phil Neville gave their account of things.

Graham Poll: "I walked past the old Highbury ground, I passed the away dressing room on the right, and Fergie was standing outside. And he just said to me: 'Good luck,' and you just think 'oh no.'"

Paul Scholes: "Vieira said something to Gary Neville in the warm-up, which was crazy really. You know, a warm-up, who's even thinking about talking to another player?"

Phil Neville: "Gary came in the dressing room and told everyone and I didn't know that Roy Keane was actually listening. Roy was doing his boots and having his drink. And Gary, being Gary, was saying: 'Vieira said this, Vieira said that, he said he's going to do this to me, he said he's going to do that to me!'"

Poll: "I'd just reminded Vieira that the last time we'd been together with Roy Keane the previous season, we'd made Roy laugh in the tunnel. So, I said: 'let's see if we can do that again tonight.' And he just went: 'Not tonight, Graham.'"

Scholes: "Roy felt that Patrick was trying to bully him. I don't think any of us could be bullied."

That version of events was backed up by the two antagonists - Keane and Vieira.

In an ITV documentary, ‘Keane And Vieira: The Best Of Enemies’ Vieira admitted he sparked the clash.

”I started it," Vieira said. "I was cool, I was really calm, I was smiling at him - and then he lost it.

"When we played at Old Trafford his (Gary Neville's) tackling was flying in on Robert Pires and he was doing it on purpose, and I said, 'Listen, we are not at Old Trafford here, this is Highbury.''"

And Keane revealed how he caught Vieira in the act.

"When we were going out for the start of the game I had forgotten my armband, and when I came out I had seen you at the top of the tunnel having a go at Gary," Keane said.

"What really annoyed me that night was that you were picking on Gary, you were almost picking on the weakest link, so that's what got my back up.

"There were two or three of you ganging up on Gary, simple as that."

Poor old Gary Neville.

In a recent interview with Soccer AM, the former right-back explained how Vieira tried intimidating him.

Gary Neville: "I could hear these footsteps behind me and Vieira shouting, 'Neville! Neville! You're not going to kick our players out on this pitch today. Roy obviously turned back, heard him and started having a go at him. He (Vieira) sort of squirted his water bottle towards Roy, then all hell broke loose."

We can’t quite imagine Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Harry Maguire doing something similar this afternoon…
