Connor McGregor has reacted to what some fans and pundits are dubbing “the greatest knockout of the year.”During the WBA super-featherweight fight between Gervonta Davis and Leo Santa Cruz, held in San Antonio in front of a socially distanced 10,000 fans, Santa Cruz was forced into the corner and was fighting back to try get away from the ropes.Santa Cruz landed a good right hand before throwing a couple of missed punches in desperation, which opened him up to a deadly uppercut from Davis, who did not need a second invitation. The resulting blow knocked Santa Cruz out stone cold.Santa Cruz was taken to hospital for some checks and later confirmed via his Instagram that he was okay. After lifting the WBA belt in the Alomodrone Arena, Davis seemed full of confidence while describing his version of events:“He punches, but he doesn’t try to get out of the way. There was nowhere for him to go on that knockout because I got him into the corner,” he said, adding:

“I don’t have to call anybody else out. I’m the top dog. Just line them up, and I’ll knock them out one by one.”

The brutal blow prompted a response from MMA superstar Conor McGregor, writing on Twitter:

“My lord! What a vicious uppercut that was. Praying for the health and safety of Santa Cruz there. The young man “Tank” Davis has some serious venom in that back-hand shot. Incredible!”

He then responded to a fan who commented with a clip of his uppercut on Floyd Mayweather back in 2017, when the two famously fought:

“I walked Floyd onto mine as he rushed in with a back-hand to my...? (to where ever he was aiming that back hand lol),”

“Davis stepped out and in with his, fully planted. Way more devastating! My shot, though slightly smothered, was still a tasty fast shot. Happy at the time.”

McGregor is currently training for his anticipated fight in January against Dustin Poirier but is also looking to get back into the ring, with rumours circulating that he is looking to fight Manny Pacquiao according to TalkSport.
