Diogo Jota has wasted no time at all making his impact at Liverpool.

With Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane long established as the front three at Anfield, splashing £40 million on Jota this summer looked to be an incredibly ham-fisted buy.

However, that couldn't have been wider of the mark with Jota staking his claim to become the club's number nine after a flurry of goals mere weeks into his Merseyside move.

Jota's blistering start

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers forward bagged his first goal in red against Arsenal, before notching Premier League winners against Sheffield United and West Ham United.

Jota had enjoyed success in the Champions League, too, with a strike against Midtjylland, but things got even better when Jurgen Klopp's men made the trip to Atalanta on Tuesday night.

The Portuguese was given the chance to prove himself in the starting XI with selection over Firmino and to say he grabbed the opportunity with both hands would be a huge understatement.

Jota scores three vs Atalanta

That's because Jota helped himself to an incredible hat-trick as Liverpool emerged 5-0 victors in Italy with strike partners Salah and Mane also chipping in with goals.

Jota's opener came with a delicious dink over Marco Sportiello, his second featured an outrageous first touch and the match ball-sealing strike saw him round the goalkeeper in style.

A remarkable display from the new signing then and there can be no greater demonstration of Jota's achievement than contextualizing how rare a Liverpool hat-trick in the Champions League really is.

In fact, Jota is only the fifth player to have bagged a treble in the famous red jersey since Europe's premier competition was rebranded in 1992, which makes for a pretty exclusive club.

Liverpool's Champions League hat-tricks

Therefore, with today being one of those once-in-a-blue-moon moments, it only made sense for us to breakdown the Liverpool stars with a Champions League match ball in their collections:

1. Michael Owen vs Spartak Moscow (2002)

It wasn't until the Champions League was more than 10 years old that Liverpool managed to produce their first hat-trick in the competition, but it seems apt that Owen would score it.

Just one year after scooping a historic Ballon d'Or, Liverpool's star man at the time helped himself to three goals in the Russian capital, cancelling out Aleksandr Danishevsky's opener in the process.

2. Yossi Benayoun vs Besiktas (2008)

The streets will never forget Benayoun's three seasons with Liverpool and a massive 10% of his goals in the red jersey came during the 8-0 annihilation of Besiktas under the floodlights at Anfield.

Benayoun lashed home his first of the night with a stinging finish into the bottom corner from Andriy Voronin's pass and doubled his money after half-time with a poacher's strike at the back post.

While the second goal had been the rebound of a John Arne Riise strike, the third came in eerily similar circumstances but this time it was a Steven Gerrard hit that left him with an open goal.

3. Philippe Coutinho vs Spartak Moscow (2017)

There might only be five Liverpool hat-tricks on the list, but Spartak have been subjected to two of them and Coutinho delivered a captain's performance just weeks before leaving for Barcelona.

The mercurial Brazilian led by example with an icy conversion from the penalty spot early on and bagged his second with a cool left-footed finish after Salah and Firmino's combination play.

After the break, the hat-trick goal came calling with Coutinho benefitting from a massive deflection that fooled the goalkeeper as Liverpool eventually romped their way to a 7-0 victory.

4. Sadio Mane vs FC Porto (2018)

Winning 5-0 away at Porto was a statement from Liverpool regardless of the goalscorers, but it was a particularly lucrative night for Mane, who ended the night with the match ball in his hands.

The Senegalese forward opened the scoring courtesy of some woeful goalkeeping from Jose Sa, before doubling his personal tally after latching onto a rebound from Firmino's thwarted strike.

However, Mane saved the best for last by combining with Danny Ings for a sumptuous one-two and capping it off with a fizzing right-footed strike to book Liverpool's place in the quarter-finals.

5. Diogo Jota vs Atalanta (2020)

Here we are, the man himself, the fifth man in the club. Credit to Jota because he finds himself rubbing shoulders with some of Liverpool's finest players of the last 20 years... and Benayoun.

That's not to mention the fact Jota scored his treble against a club fresh from challenging in the Champions League quarter-finals as opposed to the whipping boys of three of these examples.

What now for Jota?

The world is your oyster, Diogo.

It's a scary prospect for the rest of the Champions League and Premier League that arguably the finest front three in world football might just have been upgraded with even more goals.

If the form of Jota can inspire the sort of friendly competition with Firmino that will fire them up to score more and more, then I wouldn't put it past Liverpool to hoover up trophies this season.
