Sergio Ramos scored his 100th goal for Real Madrid last night in the club's 3-2 win over Inter Milan in the Champions League.

It's a ridiculous achievement for a centre-back to score a century of goals for one club and it's a feat that won't be equalled by another defender anytime soon.

Ramos' overall tally of club goals now stands at 103 for Real Madrid and Sevilla in 704 appearances in all competitions - a goal-to-game ratio of 0.15.

The numbers are mighty impressive. However, that doesn't mean the Spanish icon has been the only pragmatic player to find the back of the net regularly in the modern era.

With Ramos' latest goal scoring feat fresh in our minds, we've decided to highlight a collection of other defenders that have also mastered the art of goal scoring in recent times.

Ramos celebrates scoring

As per Transfermarkt, all the defenders below have more than 40 goals to their name at club level...

James Tavernier

Appearances: 395

Goals: 65

Goal-to-game ratio: 0.16

Rangers' free-scoring right-back has been up to his usual standards at the start of 2020/21, notching six goals in 13 games for the Scottish giants.

In the Scottish Premiership in 2018/19, the 29-year-old scored a whopping 11 goals and he also boasts a record of 93 assists during his 395 games at club level - outrageous numbers.

Naldo

Appearances: 506

Goals: 65

Goal-to-game ratio: 0.13

The giant Brazilian centre-back scored goals for fun in the Bundesliga. In his 358 games in the German top-flight, the 38-year-old rippled the back of the net on 46 occasions.

His most fruitful campaigns came in 2014/15 with Wolfsburg and 2017/18 at Schalke, Naldo scoring seven league goals on both occasions.

Marco Materazzi

Appearances: 420

Goals: 44

Goal-to-game ratio: 0.10

The no-nonsense Italian defender - who spent the 1998/99 season at Everton - was a serious goal threat in his prime, most notably at FC Perugia and Inter Milan.

Materazzi's best goal scoring season with the former came in 2000/01, when he recorded 12 in 30 Serie A games. At Inter, the now 47-year-old scored 10 times in just 28 league outings in 2006/07.

John Terry

Appearances: 750

Goals: 66

Goal-to-game ratio: 0.08

You'll be hard pushed to find many defenders more threatening from a set-piece than Terry was in his pomp with Chelsea.

Every time a free-kick or a corner was whipped in, you just knew the Englishman would get his head on the ball. Terry scored six goals in the Premier League during 2011/12, his most prolific season.

Daniel Van Buyten

Appearances: 519

Goals: 63

Goal-to-game ratio: 0.12

The now retired Belgian defender scored 10 or more goals at Hamburg (10), Marseille (15) and Bayern Munich (28) during his career.

His best season came with Marseille in 2002/03, when he scored eight goals in 35 Ligue 1 appearances, helping to secure Champions League football for Les Olympiens.

Ian Harte

Appearances: 534

Goals: 76

Goal-to-game ratio: 0.14

The Irish full-back had an absolute wand of a left peg and was consistently one of the best free-kick takers in the Premier League during his time with Leeds.

Harte's most prolific campaign came in 2009/10 with Carlisle, the left-back scoring 16 goals in 45 League One appearances.

Marcus Tulio Tanaka

Appearances: 622

Goals: 125

Goal-to-game ratio: 0.20

You may be asking, who? Well, the former Japanese international - who was born in Brazil - is one of the greatest goal scoring defenders in history.

In 2017, Tulio scored 15 times for Kyoto Sanga in the J2 League, while 52 of his career goals came in just 225 games for fellow Japanese outfit, Nagoya Grampus.

John Arne Riise

Appearances: 712

Goals: 55

Goal-to-game ratio: 0.08

The man who could whack a football harder than most. Both Riise's destructive left foot and prowess from set-pieces naturally saw him score his fair share of goals.

In three of his Premier League campaigns with Liverpool, the Norwegian scored six or more goals, his best tally coming in 2001/02 when he struck seven times for the Reds.

Dani Alves

Appearances: 778

Goals: 57

Goal-to-game ratio: 0.07

Possibly the greatest attack-minded full-back of the modern era, it's actually surprising that Alves' goal record at club level is not nearer the 100-mark - but 58 goals is still a more-than healthy return.

Amazingly, the Brazilian has only scored five goals in a league campaign once during his career, which came with Barcelona during the club's 2008/09 treble-winning season.

Branislav Ivanovic

Appearances: 587

Goals: 54

Goal-to-game ratio: 0.09

For a prolonged period of time at Chelsea, Ivanovic was the best right-back in the Premier League. He was a colossus at the back, but was also deceptively good going forward.

The Russian's most fruitful campaign in the English top-flight with the Blues came in 2012/13, when he scored five goals in 34 games.
