Liverpool and Bayern Munich are two of the strongest teams in this season's Champions League.

Aside from being the last two winners of Europe's premier competition, they have also made impressive starts to the 2020/21 campaign and will be hoping to lift 'Big Ears' aloft come May.

The Reds have won their opening three Champions League fixtures for the first time in their history, securing group-stage victories over Ajax, Midtjylland and Atalanta in quick succession.

Bayern starting strong

Meanwhile, Bayern are showing exactly why they romped to the prestigious trophy last season by extending their competition record to an astonishing 14 consecutive victories.

Despite their clash with Red Bull Salzburg being finely-poised at 2-2 entering the final 12 minutes, the Bavarians gave their Austrian opponents both barrels and emerged 6-2 victors.

Marry that to an underrated 2-1 victory away to Lokomotiv Moscow as well as the statement that is thrashing Atletico Madrid 4-0 and you have a pretty clear picture of Bayern's brilliance.

Bayern and Liverpool's greatness

As a result, there's a feeling that Bayern could extend their remarkable 2019/20 achievements, which saw them win the treble, deep into this season to create a new dynasty in the European game.

Naturally, the aforementioned Liverpool will want to have some say in that, but even if Jurgen Klopp's men do indeed overthrow the Germans, Bayern's 2020 record will endure regardless.

Besides, if there's any doubt surrounding what Hansi Flick's Bayern have achieved, you needn't look any further than the football statisticians at clubelo.com.

The greatest teams in history

Using a complicated Elo equation (check out the method here), they rank teams based on a data differential which has allowed them to calculate the greatest teams in football history.

And remarkably, both the current Bayern team and the 2020 Liverpool side, peaking in February specifically, have wrestled their way into the top 10 alongside some iconic club sides.

If that doesn't get your hands rubbing together for the upcoming Champions League race, then we don't know what will, so do yourselves a favour and check out the top 35 down below:

Liverpool and Bayern in top ten

It's pretty mind-blowing to think that, according to the statistics, two of the seven greatest club teams to have ever played the beautiful game have done so amidst the madness of 2020.

You've got to applaud Flick for elevating his omnipotent Bayern side above 2008 Manchester United, 2019 Manchester City and a 1973 Ajax side complete with Johan Cruyff.

However, it's clear that they have some way to go if they want to reach the peak that Liverpool and Klopp achieved before they lost their unbeaten run in the Premier League last season.

Even if the Reds' inaugural Premier League title does turn out to be lightning in a bottle, you've got to credit them for thrusting their name into the GOAT conversation regardless of era-building.

For now, the 2014 sides of Bayern and Real Madrid, as well as the table-topping 2012 Barcelona side, will continue to inhabit the podium, but let this show that the path to number one is far from unassailable.
