Chelsea were given an absolutely ridiculous penalty in their Champions League game against Rennes on Wednesday evening.

The Blues took the lead in the 10th minute, with Timo Werner notching his sixth Chelsea goal.

Dalbert felled Werner in the box and the German forward made no mistake from 12 yards. The Rennes defender was handed a booking for his troubles.

And Chelsea were given their second penalty of the game just before half-time and it was Dalbert that was penalised again.

Tammy Abraham had a shot from just outside the box, which cannoned off the Brazilian and on to his arm.

VAR was consulted and a penalty was given. Werner went on to dispatch the spot-kick and score his second of the game.

To make matters even worse for Rennes, Dalbert was given his second yellow card and was subsequently sent off.

Watch it below:

That is absolutely ridiculous. What is Dalbert meant to do in that situation?

He can do nothing about the ball deflecting onto his arm. It certainly wasn't intentional.

The only place he can put his arms to make sure the ball won't hit them is behind his back. But that is just silly and defenders shouldn't have to defend like that.

We can only imagine how angry Dalbert is after being penalised and then sent off for that.

He looked perplexed when he was making his way off the pitch and understandably so.

Sadly, it's just the latest in what has been a number of ridiculous decisions made by VAR.

Both VAR and the handball rule certainly need to change. Because at the moment, they are both killing the game that we all love.
