Leeds United have had a breakneck start to life in the Premier League.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side won promotion to the top-flight with their free-wheeling football last season and it has largely continued in the top-flight.

After a 4-3 loss to Liverpool in their first game back in the Premier League, they then beat Fulham by the same scoreline, downed Sheffield United 1-0 and drew 1-1 with Manchester City.

Their second defeat of the season followed against Wolves, losing 1-0, though they did steady the ship with a 3-0 thumping of Aston Villa.

On Monday, though, they were totally outclassed by Leicester City, falling to a dispiriting 4-1 defeat.

The result leaves them 12th in the top-flight, with 10 points from seven games. They are ahead of Manchester United.

However, they have been ripped apart by Gabby Agbonlahor, the former Aston Villa striker, who believes that Bielsa has a huge problem in defence.

The club have conceded 13 goals in total this term, a figure only beaten by four clubs, including leaders Liverpool, amazingly.

And Agbonlahor simply doesn’t believe that the backline is up to snuff in the top-flight.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “I think their weak spots are definitely when they try and play too aggressive and high press, their defence isn’t good enough for me.

“If they had quicker defenders at the back then they could play that way against anyone. On Monday, Vardy was like he was playing in the playground, he was getting the ball, having fun, he was running with it across the pitch and turning and Harvey Barnes, they were having fun because the Leeds defence is quite poor when it’s got space in behind them.

“We’ve seen it, you know, Vardy had how many one on ones? A few of them he missed, there was one in the second half where he missed, he fell over and that’s what’s going to cost Leeds in games where they try and press teams high.

“I mean, if you do that against a Liverpool team, and that’s what happens with Mane and Salah on the counter-attack, you’re going to get hurt.

“So if there’s something that they’re probably need to look at, maybe, is trying to get some
quicker defenders back there.”

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

Agbonlahor may not be entirely wrong here.

Leeds do play with a highly aggressive style, consistently trying to win the ball back high up the pitch and punish their opponents as a result.

But it can lead them into trouble.

Leicester are masters of sitting back, letting opponents enter their traps, and then springing, utilising the electric pace of Vardy to devastating effect.

That’s exactly what happened on Monday night but one has to think that Bielsa will learn from it and tweak his tactics to tighten the Whites up.

They can ill-afford to need to score three or four goals a game to pick up three points.
