It's been a sobering couple of weeks for Aston Villa.

After a wonderful start to the season it seemed that Dean Smith's side looked set for a campaign of defying expectations.

While that may still happen it now seems unlikely that Villa Park will be witnessing a title challenge.

Two defeats in two matches have seen Villa drop to eighth place in the table - admittedly still a decent positioning after last term's relegation battle.

Smith has seen his squad significantly upgraded this term and that's why their results have been improved.

The likes of Ollie Watkins, Matty Cash and Ross Barkley have all moved to the club and already look like shrewd additions.

Add into that the new contract that was handed to Jack Grealish and you can see why things are looking up.

But it seems that another key player in John McGinn could be next in line.

The midfielder is a key player for the Villains, and according to Gabby Agbonlahor, he's fully deserving of any deal that comes his way.

Asked if McGinn will sign a new deal, Agbonlahor told Football Insider: "Yeah, hundred percent. I think that’ll be done and dusted in due course.

“Even on Sunday, when it wasn’t going as well for Aston Villa in the first half, he was never hiding, he was getting on the ball, he was driving the team on.

“He’s like that unsung hero, John McGinn, doesn’t get enough praise for what he actually does.

“Watching live on Sunday, I noticed the way like he’s just everywhere – buying fouls, taking quick free kicks.

“He just wants to get the team on and he’s very talkative, which I didn’t think he was but he was watching live. A great player and someone that Villa need to tie up.”

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

It's hard to think of a player that deserves a new contract more than John McGinn.

The Aston Villa star truly is the unsung hero of Dean Smith's side as he quietly goes about his business in the centre of the park.

Jack Grealish and Ross Barkley have been the players to take the plaudits this term, but there's no doubt that McGinn is equally as influential.

It doesn't seem likely that he'll move on but it's certainly in Villa's best interests to get a deal done as soon as possible.
