According to The Athletic, Southampton are in no rush when it comes to Danny Ings' knee injury.

Indeed, while the England striker is undoubtedly hugely important to the Saints' cause, his record of knee problems means the club will likely ease him back into proceedings.

Two major ACL problems wrecked his time at Liverpool and saw him miss 498 days of action across the 2015/16 and 2016/17 campaigns.

As much of a blow as not having Ings for 4-6 weeks will be, a steady approach to managing his return is obviously the wisest thing Southampton could do.

His return to form has been nothing short of astounding during the last two seasons and, given how he's carried the goalscoring burden in that time period, it's fair to say any European ambition Saints have rest on his shoulders, long-term wise.

There is an international break next week which luckily eats into some of his recovery time and the club do have some favourable fixtures on the horizon.

Newcastle visit St. Mary's on Friday night before games against an out of form Manchester United, Brighton and Sheffield United. It's only Wolves who Saints play between now and mid-December who should genuinely worry Ralph Hasenhuttl considering how his side have been playing.

Danny Ings injury Che Adams

The signing of Theo Walcott could offer an alternative, too. While not regarded as a striker these days, he does have lengthy experience leading the line in the Premier League so perhaps he can offer more pace through the middle alongside Che Adams.

Adams has the highest non-dead-ball xG in Saints' side per 90 minutes (0.48) which does suggest he's on the right track to better his two goals so far this season.

If relied upon to be the main man in Ings' absence, the fact he's getting into the right positions enough to rank highly in that metric could mean more goals are not hard to come by.

Ings' injury is a blow but Southampton are right in their approach. Good things come to those who wait.
