Manchester United continue to support manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after their 2-1 defeat to Istanbul Basaksehir - despite reports linking Mauricio Pochettino to the position at Old Trafford. On Thursday, it was reported by the Manchester Evening News that the club had made an approach to hire Pochettino, who has been out of work since being sacked by Tottenham Hotspur last November.Pochettino has been linked with the Man United job for a long time and with Solskjaer’s United underperforming, rumours that the Red Devils were ready to move on from the Norwegian gathered steam in the wake of the Champions League defeat. However, Sky Sports claim that isn’t true and that Solskjaer retains the support of the club."From what I'm being told, Manchester United still see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as a long-term project and somebody who should be given the backing and support to do this job. I don't think anything's changed,” Sky Sports News reporter James Cooper said."What's their reaction to the last couple of days? I think it's not good. A week ago, we were all saying what an amazing coach and how things have changed under Solskjaer."He out-thought RB Leipzig when they won 5-0 at Old Trafford and everything seemed to be changing. The flipside to that is, how on earth did those players beat Leipzig 5-0 and then put in the performances that we've seen over the last couple of games?

"This time last year, there were the same questions against Solskjaer. The message from United is that they're backing Solskjaer. He is the man for the long-term, but things do need to improve on the pitch."

Sky Sports’ report has been corroborated by The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell.

He reports that Solskjaer’s job isn’t under threat even if United lose to Everton in the Premier League on Saturday.

“The feeling is he deserves the opportunity to rectify matters,” Whitwell claims, “having only recently beaten Paris Saint-Germain and, convincingly, RB Leipzig.”

So Solskjaer's job is safe for now. He’ll need to get United back on track though, and sharpish.
