Less than eight games in to the new Premier League season, the transfer rumour mill is once again churning in the run-up to the January window.

With the COVID-19 pandemic condensing the footballing calendar in way we've never seen before, the New Year sales are just around the corner and a rumour involving two of the continent's biggest clubs has already emerged.

Indeed, according to Calcio Mercato, Inter Milan could offer Tottenham Hotspur Christian Eriksen for Dele Alli.

Well, well, well.

What a story this would be.

After attempting to leave Tottenham for so long, Eriksen's big move away from North London hasn't gone to plan as he finds himself out of the first-team picture under Antonio Conte. That, along with Alli's situation under Jose Mourinho, appears to be the basis of the rumour.

Still, that doesn't mean it'd be a good idea.

Creativity doesn't appear to be the main problem at Spurs. Harry Kane has already laid on a Premier League-high eight assists this season while Sergio Reguilon and Son have chipped in with two.

According to WhoScored's data, six players are averaging over one key pass per game too, so bringing another creative player in would make little sense.

Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli

Perhaps a swap deal is the only way to get Alli off the wage bill given the fact clubs may be shorter on cash as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the report does also mention another Inter star in Milan Škriniar.

If a deal could potentially be done to strengthen at centre-back with someone like him coming in, then it'd make far more sense than Eriksen. As nice a story as it'd be, it's hard to see the logic.

Škriniar, meanwhile, has averaged more interceptions (6.65 to 4.59 and 3.9) and ball recoveries in the opponent's half (2.56 to 0.23 and 0.46) than either Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez respectively, so could potentially give Mourinho more of a front-foot defender.

Should Alli be swapped for an Inter player, it must be Škriniar. Eriksen's time at Tottenham ended long ago.
